    Making 300 Savage brass

Well, I like to keep my rifles shooting and not be dependent on the Factory for ammo in case they decide to discontinue it or make production runs every now and then.
I bought a set of Lee dies and a case length gauge for trimming brass.
I took some 308 brass and resized it in the 300 dies. Then i chucked the case holder for the case trimmer in my cordless drill and and used the case length gauge screwed into the cutter tool and trimmed the brass down to 300 Savage case length. I then ran the brass through the resizing die again just to make sure everything was properly resized. I used some pliers to hold the cutter while running the drill to cut the cases. Takes a little while to do 20 or 40 cases but once they are done, you will have your brass.
When resizing I set the dies to the shell holder and and adjust down till the press cams over and the top of the stroke to make sure the shoulder is set back to factory diemensions. I function tested them through the rifle and they worked just fine.
I have 3 boxes of Remington factory loads but I don't want to shoot that up at $36/box when I can load my own at $10-15/box depending which bullet you use.

I do the same for my '99. Rem or Win work fine but Federal cases will not work. Thicker neck?

Setting the shoulder back during the case forming process causes brass from the old shoulder or body to be the material for the new neck. That can result in thicker necks than normal.

Has anyone checked to see if the new case with bullet seated has a neck diameter within the SAAMI max diameter for a loaded cartridge?
