Breaking in a barrel is different for manufacturers. Shilen doesn't require you to break their barrels in but they say if you want to follow a break in procedure most procedures published will work. If you want, theirs can be found at http://www.shilen.com/faq.html#question10 . Shilen's statement, "Clean after each shot for the first 5 shots. The remainder of the break-in is to clean every 5 shots for the next 50 shots. During this time, don't just shoot bullets down the barrel during this 50 shot procedure. This is a great time to begin load development. Zero the scope over the first 5 shots, and start shooting for accuracy with 5-shot groups for the next 50 shots."

Cleaning intervals are going to vary, but a few things to note:

- Always scrub/clean new barrels before shooting them
- Never shoot a dry bore as it promotes copper fouling
- Let barrel cool to the touch between shots while doing load workup

Otherwise, just go out and shoot it.

I cleaned my 308, barrel when I got it bull barrel new .now shot 28 rounds in one and a half hours want home pushed three patches down the barrel almost no powder or black on any of the patches .I just used light oil.

Just received my Shilen chrome moly Match barrel in 260 and will be testing it for the first time tomorrow with hand loads. Other than cleaning before trip tomorrow, no break in planned.

Shooting a factory 22" sporter Savage .308 barrel here. I bought it new a few months ago, and after about 500 rounds down the tube, it's consistently under an inch with just about anything I feed it.

I cleaned it as well as I know how without damaging anything, then cleaned it again after each of the first 10 rounds, then after every 5 rounds for the first 50. Then I just shot the hell out of it. :D

I have to say it's only gotten better over the past 200-300 rounds. No more fliers. No more suprises. The other day, on a cold barrel my brother borrowed it and shot 3 rounds into 2" at 300 yards like it was nothing.
