    Leupold sale

My new model 116 in 25-06 is in need of some optics and I can get a leupold vx-3 3.5-10x40 for $349 or 4.5-14x40 for $389. Which one should I get? The rifle is being mostly used for deer and some coyote hunting

I have 2 of the 4.5-14 VX-3s, and you won't be disappointed. I don't have the 10X, but I would say the 14X makes it a bit more versatile since the low power is almost identical between the two. All around eye relief may be better with the 10X, but that's just me trying to find a con on the 14X. I would spend the extra $40 on the 14X.

Here is a picture of one of my 14X VX-3s installed on my Axis .223.

Natchez shooters supply. I ended up getting the 3.5-10x40 since the 4.5-14 was sold out. Paid 350 with free shipping

I got an email from Natchez on those also. Great deals but terrible time for a sale being right after Christmas.

I picked up 2 of the VX-3 3.5-10x40 for $399 each, but Leupold had $100 rebates thru 12/31. So, they cost me $299 each.
Gave one to my son-in-law for Christmas. He was almost in tears.
The other is on the shelf waiting for my next rifle purchase.

Long term Leupold fan here. I made the mistake of testing a few scoped rifles at dusk 35 years ago. A 4-12 Redfield, 2.5-8 Bausch & Lomb, 3-9 Weaver, and a 3-9 Leupold. Sold off every other brand & have been straight Leupold since.

To the subject at hand, I have both. 1 4.5-14 and 4 3.5-10's, by far I prefer the 3.5-10 for my hunting & close range (100-400 yd) field use varmint rifles. I'll buy more 3.5-10s where needed, but unless it was a super deal, don't plan on any more 4.5-14s. They don't have quite the magnification I'm looking for in a long range varmint rifle. I have 6.5-20s and 8.5-25s for those rifles that I use mainly off a bench.

IMHO, The combination of great, non critical, eye relief-size-and excellent optics far outweigh the extra 4x of magnification on deer size targets out to 500 yards. The 3.5-10s just seem to pop up perfectly when I shoulder the rifle.

rphguy, I'm very envious. Good thing I didn't run across that deal or the CC would have been loaded up even more than it was.
