hands down an after market barrel is the way to go.
I have Axis that I am planning to try to turn into a precision rifle. It has a regular barrel, I am thinking of switching to a heavy barrel. Can I order a HB directly from Savage or is aftermarket the way to go?

Correct me if I am wrong, but there is a difference between a HB and BB? I bought this gun used, how can I tell if it has a heavy barrel on it? Thanks.
Aftermarket barrel is the way to go:

HB=Heavy Barrel
BB=Bull Barrel
The way you can tell is to measure the barrel at different points on the barrel and compare them with one of the aftermarket manufacturers. Sporter barrels are generally around .550-.650 at the muzzle and larger than that is a heavy barrel. Bull Barrels are about 1.00 at the muzzle or larger
That's the info I was looking for, Thanks.
I would say if upgrading to a bull or heavy barrel you may want to upgrade from the plastic stock to a laminate one to balance out the weight. And a laminate stock will be stiffer and provide better accuracy anyways.
