    110 future build

I just traded a New England Firearms SB2 ULTRA. 357-MAX for a Savage Model 110 chambered in 7mag.

My intentions is to use the Savage action, and build a Model 110 chambered in .223, or 25-06 caliber. This is my first ever bolt-rifle build, so I'll be picking a few brains in here, and joining the ranks of the "paid memberships" to scavenge whatever I can in parts, and knowledge, from members there as well.

    Plans:
    Target barrel
    Laminated thumbhole stock
    Timney trigger
    Oversized bolt handle
    Bipod

Here are some pics of the donor rifle.

    Thanks for looking!!!

That was a good trade for sure!

While a 7mm action can certainly be used for a 223 you'll need to change out the bolt head and possibly the firing pin as well. something you may consider is trading that donor for a short action, maybe one already set up with the .378" bolt head.

Just an option to keep in mind, best of luck!

Can anyone tell me if this is a stagger, or centerfeed, and some details with the serial number I provided? The Savage website doesn't go back that far....thanks!!

It will be a staggered feed action with that old flat back action.

You might have a hard time finding a magazine box and follower for a 110 223,those are hard to come by anymore.

I'm beginning to find that out, Hillbilly...I read somewhere a SA mag follower will work, but has to be shimmed in order to properly fit. That sounds sketchy to me, and honestly, I don't want to go the single shot route...

25-06 would probably be your best bet if you are going to keep this action.. Change out your bolt head with .470 face diameter.. Check out the shank size on barrel and make sure you get the correct one for your action.. your best bet for 223 is to find some pawn shops and see if you could trade for a short action model 10 or a Stevens 200.. you might even find one i 223.. With deer season here they will trade you in a second if they have a 223 on the shelf..

Changing to a 25-06 shouldn't be too difficult; barrel (naturally), bolt head, and firing pin (maybe?), and since it uses the long action you should be good to go.

A lower recoil option might be to go to a 6.5x55 Swede or 260 Remington (another 6.5mm, based off of the 308 WIN), both of which can use short actions, but can also use a long action with bullets seated less deeply in the cases. They can be loaded to 2900-3000 fps using 139/140 gr bullets for game or long distance shooting or light-loaded to 2400 fps or less with 107 gr bullets or ... Easy to shoot! In addition, the 6mm Remington, and the 6.5 Creedmoor for that matter) are available in factory loads.

The 0.473 family includes everything from the 35 Whelen down to the 6mm Remington/243 WIN.

6.5x55 swede has a great advantage over the 260 remington. The lapua brass for the 6.5x55 is much cheaper per 100 than for the 260. Otherwise, both will do about the same.

Another option is to look at the 220 swift if you want to stay in the .22 cal.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

With a 7 mag donor, I'd consider a 257 Wby. Change the barrel and start shooting!!
