    Paging Hammer (swift)

    Hey guys and gals,

I recently purchased a 220 swift barrel and am looking for some suggestions regarding powders, primers, etc. I have done some research and found that there are many powders that are being used. Whats a good starting point? Things to look for? I don't want to burn the barrel too fast, but want some great accuracy as well. Have nearly zero experience with this caliber, so any help is greatly appreciated. :D

    .

IMR 4064 and WW 760 have been known to work in the Swift.

    Don't worry about the barrel.

For a little change, Shilen, Pac-Nor, et al, will make you another one.

You can actually get on the "Barrel of the Week" program and have another barrel arrive at your doorstep every Thursday.

Your wife can have it installed by the time you get home that evening.

Membership actually cost less than most people save towards their children's education and saving for their own retirement.

I signed up for the barrel of the week club last week. But, it seems that someone received more than his fair share, so they are back ordered

I think that ill start with 4064 and see how that goes. I already have 414 on the grocery list for the .243 so Ill give that a try also.

From what I have read, brass life seems to be short. Is there a brand that works the best?

Still have 220 Swift brass that was first fired in 1977 that I am still using.

    Trim case length.
    Don't overturn necks.
    Never push back case shoulders.
Carry a big hammer for opening and closing the bolt.

You do have a supply of 48 grain Winchester bullets to use for your loads, right?

Well Hammer will tell you that straying from the 48 grain bullet is taking one step on that road that leads to perdition, socialism, plagues of locusts and all types of abominations.

While I respect his beliefs and agree that the 48 grain Winchester bullet is the projectile of choice for loading the Swift, I do think that if you are in a real pinch you can get away with using 50 grain projectiles as long as you make ABSOLUTELY SURE that no women of virtue, children, or good dogs are around to see you do it.

You should not use any 55 grain or heavier slugs in the Swift, or else you risk stopping time, turning water to fire, and unleashing an army of undead prairie dogs on the world!!

went to the guns hop today, no 48gr winnies. So, I picked up a box of 40gr NBTs. Had a few minutes and loaded 5 over 38 gr of 4064. I will load some more tonight; working down a grain and up a couple in .5 increments. If the 55s turn water to fire, the forty's should turn it to wine.

    Re: Paging Hammer (swift)

I'm sorry, but 48 grainers are weenie loads. The only reason 48 grainers were ever loaded by Winchester is that was the only way they could acieve the 4000+ FPS needed for advertising. A much better load is made with a 55 grainer with maybe 37+ ? grains of 4064.

Why would anyone shoot anything less than one shoot in a 22-250?

    Eric in NC is right.

48 grain Winchesters are what separates us from the pagan-worshipping abyss.

Only with the most care may 50-grainers be substituted and then one has to be concerned with the example and lessons that the young may mistakenly learn.

Of course, a 22-250 shooter would tempt one with 55-grain bullets. They have also been known to eat honey without the comb and eat canned biscuits.

LOL you guys are funny as heck.

If I haven't switched gun shops by now (because of all they have put me through), then I probably never will. The management sucks, but Jim behind the counter is one of the best there is.

Hammer, I hear what your saying about the 22-250 crowd

Since purchasing my first Win Model 70 Super Grade .220 Swift in 1960 + or -, I have been a devoted follower of the cartridge, not the rifle.

Before denigrating the 22-250 (22 Varminter) too loudly one must remember that the proletariat need a rifle also and we certainly do not what them invading our ranks.
