I have an Axis that I converted to a 300 blackout. I noticed that my rifle does not strike the primer hard enough at times. I'm using CCI primers for my subsonic loads. Primer strikes are light, but it's making a dimple in the primer itself.
I know that Wolff offers a 32/36lb striker springs for Savage SA/LA rifles. Has anyone ever had issues with light primer strikes with their Axis. If yes, what did you do to resolve this issue?
I called Wolff and asked if I could use the 110 striker springs and they told me that it's a different length compared to Axis rifles.
I called Savage and the woman I spoke to suggested cutting some coils on the Wolff striker springs to fit in the Axis.
I'm going to take a part the entire bolt to clean it out to make sure that nothing is preventing the firing pin from making contact with the primer.
Any suggestions?
I don't suspect that the answer is the spring and think you're on the right track by giving it a detail strip and inspection.
Do you happen to know if the rifle would fire in its factory configuration? That could be an indication that the spring is insufficient. Is the bolt handle fully down when the bolt is closed? Sometimes the cocking cam pin can catch the cocking ramp upon firing and produce light strikes.
I never shot the rifle when it was a .223, so don't know the answer. The bolt handle is completely down when the shots are fired.
The Wolf spring won't work in an Axis as they're two totally different designs. See the following articles for pic's showing the differences...

The Axis spring set-up has plenty enough energy to set off a primer. I would suspect it is a headspace issue.

If head space is up to specs, sized brass may have the shoulder set back to far. Measure unsized fired case & sized case to see how much shoulder bump is .002'' to .004'' should work.
I'll take a look at headspace. I have the gauges, so it won't take long to double check headspace.
My Axis in 6.8spc will not ignite about 10-15% of military primers, both CCI 41 and Wolf large rifle, most of those work with a second strike. It's 100% reliable with with CCI 400 or 450, Win WLR, and Federal GM210 primers. I checked Protrusion and headspace, both are good. The only thing left is the spring, I don't think it has the power to ignite harder primers.
They weren't designed for military ammo....so, don't use hard primers.

The most accurate loads from this gun have been with Wolf large rifle primers. Not using them is an extremely poor solution. I'll make a new spring if I have to.
