low powered variable for stevens long action

Hi all

I have built a wildcat its a 6.5x55 improved case necked up to 358. Should mirror the whelen or there abouts.

I got a set of dnz rings for it and have an old 3-9 mounted up still in the stevens stock which is painted with krylon.

I would like to put a low powered variable like a weaver 1-3 or similar budget scope but need something long enough to fit the long action. I realise a piccatinny rail would have made it easier to fit something but wasn't the look I was after.

Anyway any suggestions on a budget scope?

My 2-7 is too short and the power adjust ring touches in the base of the rings.

I am also considering second hand, as I am on a very tight budget and thinking even an old weaver 2x I think they were but not sure on how much eye relief they probably have.

I am using a circa 1970 weaver 400 classic 4x on my 500/375. Not saying I won't replace it when I can... but it works. Mirage isn't even all that bad over the noon hour. Not in the same class as modern coated glass but it's very clear. Probably cost as much as a savage back then.

You didn't specify what you have for bases, but Leupold and Weaver both make extended rings that allow mounting of short tube scopes on longer actions. There are probably other manufacturers that make them also.

As noted they are DNZ rings low 2 piece think they are huntmasters.

Might just have to scout around the local shops and see what suits.

Had the same problem with the DNZ Hunt Reapers on my Savage Axis. The Axis Action is just a tad shorter than the 110 Series Long Action so to get the scope to fit I turned the front scope ring around backwards and then I was able to mount the scope. This may or may not work on a Long Action but might be worth a try.

Yep I did them that way so they would fix. I got my old 3-9x40 fitted so see if it survives the 358.

I know you said you didn't necessarily want to go this route but I was in the same boat 4 years ago when I build this rig for my oldest son. After trying two different sets of bases I went with the EGW rail. I got a great deal on the 2-7x Vortex Viper for it and needed to make it work. Four years and a few whitetail later, we have had no issues. Love that little scope. I wished I had picked up a second or a third at the time I found this one on clearance. It build both of my boys starter rifles based on long actions so they can become what they want in the future caliber wise.
