Building a 338 edge, what caliber donor to start with?

I keep going back and forth on either building a 338 edge or getting a factory savage in 338 lapua. I don't want a single shot. I've read about using a 375 ruger but after looking at bullet demensions, it looks like it won't be long enough. Any info would be helpful.

I have not had much luck finding a savage in 300 rum and when I did it was way overpriced.

You'll need to modify things anyway to make a repeater so any long action will work and eject a loaded round. If you don't mind single shot and pulling the bolt to eject a loaded round then a short action will work.

Get a 300win or 7mmMag centerfeed action. Also, get a stock in the style you like that is inletted for a centerfeed factory mag. Then just use the Accurate-Mag bottom metal and CIP length magazines.

Install your barrel of choice and you should be good to go.

You will also have to get any AISCS style magazine milled to be compatible with RUM cases. There is a strengthening rib that needs to be milled off because it interferes with the RUM case shoulder.

Don't start with a stagger feed action. It's mag opening isn't long enough without modification.

If you do not want a single shot, am investing in bottom medal anyway and considering RUM brass availability or lack there of: You might as well get a lapua, It's just to easy now days.

From someone that just built an Edge...

If I had had the money, I'd have just bought a Lapua. The benefit to the Edge is being able to build it on a standard long action. I built mine on a centerfeed 270 long action. I'm shooting 300gr Hybrids. To eject a loaded round, pulling the bolt is a must. To make it a repeater, I'd have to sink the bullet deep in the case, or run a smaller bullet, AND mill out some of the bottom of the action, AND do some custom mag work. The Edge as a repeater really isn't very feasible unless you're running smaller bullets, and even then, it can be tricky. 300RUM brass is next to impossible to find right now as well. If you've got the cash, I'd build off of a 110LRH or a 110FCP. You'll be much better off, IMO.

Thanks for the information, a coworker who is a weatherby fan keeps telling me to get the 375 h&h as a donor and build a 338-378 weathery.

378 Weatherby has a larger case head and is longer than the RUM or H&H. Bolt thrust issues to go along with the OAL problem sounds like a good idea to me.

I have a large shank stainless Savage Model 116FSAK in 300 RUM and a stainless McGowen 30" bull barrel in 338 Edge (1:9 twist), single shot is the only practical option for this rifle?

I have really been thinking 338 rum, I believe the only difference is a different go guage To make it a single shot 338 edge.
