    Axis 223 to 300 Blackout

    I have run into a major issue converting my Axis 223 to 300 blackout.

    I purchased a ER Shaw 300 blackout barrel and while trying to install the barrel ran into issue with the threads. After speaking with a local gunsmith, he suggested I purchase a thread tap to clean up the threads then I would be good. Well lets just say I am no machinist and cross thread the tap and destroyed my receiver. I am now in the process of hunting down a used Axis 223 to finish the project.

    Does anyone know if the receiver is the same size for calibers other than .223 Rem? I have reached out to Savage but still waiting to hear back from them.

    the axis receiver is the same on all the axis , long or short action . you can use any axis action and reuse your axis bolt when you head space

    Thanks! This will make the process much easier to find a replacement.

    What was the problem with the receiver threads?

    Not sure it seemed to be an issue with the threads but I destroyed the threads with the thread tap but the barrel would screw all the way on but it was not level.

    I've been wanting an Axis action for a project. Here is how I'd go about getting one as cheaply as possible:

    Buy an Axis Heavy Barrel rifle for about $305 from GrabaGun or CenterfireGuns. Add $20 FFL fee.
    Get Savage $50 rebate
    Sell heavy barrel for +/- $125
    Total = $150

    Since you have the rest of the parts, you could sell off the bolt, mag, and stock assembly and likely get a big chunk of that $150 back too.

    Good luck.

    What about getting a smith to ream and re-thread the receiver for a large shank? Is that feasible or risible? You likely won't find large shank barrels in 300 Blackout, of course, but other people might be interested in using it as a platform for a build.

    What were the symptoms of the original thread problem, jmhollid? I'm just interested because we have had a lot of people here taking apart Axises, and I can't remember anyone having a problem (other than the infernal tiny, steel balls). If there is a larger issue, it'd be good to let people know what to look out for.

    I cleaned as much of the balls out as I could but the barrel would not screw in all the way. I took the barrel and receiver to a local gunsmith and he had the same issue and suggested getting the thread tap.

    I inspected the threads and could not see any visible issues.

    I Axis 223 was rough as well. When I removed the 223 barrel...there was so much metal shavings on my barrel nut that it had to be replaced. I've never seen so many metal shavings on any firearm. I'm glad my receiver threads where not damaged.
