Help me decide on optic

Platform: Remi 700 .223
Application: Coyote rifle
Expected Range: 100 to 600 yards
Background: This is for my cousin that I am helping build. I have already decided on a SWFA/ savage 10 build for mine (when my funds allow). He has to have variable power and has narrowed it to two scopes. Any info on why you choose one over the other would be great. Thanks

For Coyote anytime anywhere choose Trijicon. I use a 3-9X Trijicon on my fastest velocity rifle dedicated to coyotes anytime anywhere at day or night:



Third rifle upright from the right is a Rem 700 CDL BLUE FLUTED .257 Weatherby Magnum. The reflection of 3rd from the Right can also include the .375 HH 700 22" REM CDL--but that barrel has a barrel band and the barrel is shorter than the 26" .257 w/Trijicon. The Trijicon is not only on that rifle but another here called the Mini 14:



I've also got it on a COLT LE:

with B Square one piece aluminum mount with screws to attach the scope after the removable handle from COLT is removed.

In bad light there is no finer point and light than an ACCUPOINT in RED (my preference) or GREEN. There is tritium that lasts about 5 or more years but after that the light gathering fibers of the Trijicon still give you pinpoint LIGHT in moonlight or simple cloud cover light from the neighborhood around you.

Six hundred yards is easily done with a .257 Weatherby Magnum and the scope, although 3-9X and no 20X is so pristine in resolution the extra magnification is unnecessary. Also a larger and clearer field of view for you and general safety in sending a bullet going over 3K fps on its way.

I included the Mini 14 and the COLT LE M4 with the REM 700 bolt to show the scope works in these arenas all the time for me. If I could replace every single mounted rifle scope in my house with this Trijicon RED 3-9X I would get to it but I have other scopes on rifles that will never ever leave them so the case is closed about that.

To the left of my .257 with Trijicon is my Winchester 70 in .264 Winchester Magnum also dedicated to coyotes and deer and elk. To the left of that is my REM 700 Anniversary 6mm Remington in stainless steel fluted. To the left of that is my Anschutz .22 Hornet--all dedicated to VARMINT.

I got interested in high powered rifles for varmints only and so when it comes to my primary target in varmint it's coyote and that means anything from .22 short to .264 Winchester in my book all depending upon wind and range.

Between the two chooses you have listed I would go with the Vortex. They are solidly made scopes and offer a whole lot for the money.
You must have more open land in Florida than we do here in Virginia as most people here seem to hunt coyotes with shotguns it seems! If 600 is the farthest you are going to stretch the gun out I would probably stick with less magnification since 10x will get you to 600 without any problems. Just last week I stretched a 16x out to over 1100 yards and never felt like I needed more scope.

I would also pick the vortex from the two listed.
I would do a 2.5-16 / 3-15 / 4-16 at minimum ,at 600 magnification is becoming a desirable companion when shooting at small camouflaged targets.
Stay with your 6-24 plan if you really do not expect to be shooting inside 100.

A fixed 4x could do it (I have), suggesting high magnification is not truly necessary but I would keep your high magnification plan.
Necessary and ideal are totally different.

We did go with the Vortex and this rig is for hunting yotes in Kentucky on Farms with shots much further then 600 yards, but it being there and us being capable at this point of taking it is two different things. Very few times has a less then 100 yard shot presented itself up there.
