What are your thoughts on a custom Savage 6.5 Creedmoor

Guys have a buddy who is entertaining the thought of a 6.5 CM. He has a custom 6.5x55 swede, with muzzle brake I helped him build that shoots the lights out with a 120, 85 or 140graing bullet. Several of us get together and shoot 500yds. He wanted one to shoot the 123gr. Sierras at 500, I told him sounded good, gonna true the receiver up, put on a Krieger CBI orShilen varmint barrel, 8 twist, SSS trigger and aftermarket stock and recoil lug. What do you guys think!

I am guessing that the 6.5x55 doesn't like shooting the 123's?

Sounds like y'all have a decent plan. Many 6.5CM's have been built on Savages and most people report good accuracy. Me personally I don't have much love for the 6.5CM, Don't know why but just don't. I'd rather have a 6.5-06 or a 6.5 WSM or a 6.5x55 were I trekking down the 6.5 road. I am more of a 6mm guy so that may have a lot to do with it. Sounds like you have a good plan started so let us know how it does when its built.

    Why sierra 123's?
Most CM guys are shooting 140 amax VLDs or scenars out to 1000yrds with excellent results. Its what the gun was designed to do.

Im sure itll shoot 123's well too but that goes without saying.

Pretty much any build will shoot well if its built right and you tailor the load properly to the gun.
Only standouts with the CM are the high BC bullets and the brass and barrel life. Coupled with the steal that is hornandy brass for this gun.

Boots the thing is, the 6.5x55 swede shoots 120grSP Sierras into sub 1/2 inch groups with boring regularity. I am trying to talk him into just building a heavy barrel swede instead of switching to the CM, for just a shorter action, since he will not be doing anything but bench/truck shooting for fun with it.

The .260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 6.5x55 are all so close in ballistics that other reasons need to be brought into the decision.

Take a good look at bullet jump if a particular bullet doesn't work well when it otherwise should. Then be sure the throat accommodates that bullet. After that, go with the cartridge he 'likes' best. Hard to go wrong with that, unless he wants to shoot a wide variety of bullet weights.

    +1

Don't see the 123's at all. I would definitely consider the Norma Golden Target in 130gr BC=548. Way better ballistics than the 123 Sierra. Have had three 6.5 CM's and the 130 Norma shot outstanding in all of them.
