Pet loads for Model 12LRPV 260 Rem.

Anybody got any they would like to share. I just got the gun and have shot some factory ammo and a few generic handloads from a friend. Im not impressed with the precision aspect of this rifle right now. 1.140 five shot group at 100 yds is the best ive been able to get out of it so far.

It has a vortex viper 6.5-20x50 in DNZ one piece mounts. Other than that, its bone stock.

I recently started some load development with an LRP in .260 that I recently got back from Savage for warranty issues-at any rate tried a number of different powders, settled on 43 grains on H4350, 140 grn berger LR BT HP's seated at the lands, .5 MOA or so ( pics in my thread Too Much MOA). Tried Hornady AMax, with fair accuracy, 129 grn SST's were very accurate as well, with 45.5 or so grains of IMR4831, these are stout loads so start low and work up, I have no pressure signs thru my rifle. Incidentally the Hornadys like a jump, the Bergers like to be seated at or close to the lands in mine.

Just another note-mine likes to be fouled. Accuracy improves as I shoot more thru it.

That could be my problem. I bought the gun used and meticulously cleaned the bore to like new. Maybe I will just burn up the ammo I have now and see if it tightens up before I start load development.

Another thing I've done with mine, is play with action torque. Mine has the HS Precision stock and aluminum bedding block, I tried anywhere from 35in/lbs to 65in/lbs in 5 lb increments and found that this rifle definitely shoots better at 35-40in/lbs, anything higher and groups widened to 1-1.5 inches. Some say higher is better, but this rifle shoots way more consistently at the low end.

I have found quite a few of my Savages like 35 to 40 inch lbs best. This in diff stocks most with alum. blocks and some without.

You might try 38.0g of varget under 142 smk's. I had a very reputable shooter pass this on as " this should be your beginning and end of load development with this combo" and it works great and is in the very safe range if your chamber is in spec. Fwiw, I was loading mine at 2.815 oal. The smk's seem to shoot fine with a jump.
