110 standard shank for 338 Lapua

My 110 Standard Shank, Large Pin, action was manufactured for 7mm REM MAG. I changed the barrel to 300 WIN MAG, works fine. I want a second barrel in 338 LAPUA. Can I use this new bolt head if I drill out the firing pin hole to take the Large Pin? Savage Arms Bolt Head Long Action Savage 110BA Push Feed Small Firing Pin Hole Right Hand 338 Lapua Magnum

Or is there a 338 Lapua bolt head available for standard shank large pin 110 actions?

NO and NO. The .338 Lapua has a dedicated action that is suited for that caliber. A standard shank will not handle a cartridge that large.

Don't take this information lightly. Using anything but a 338 Lapua action will put you as a runner up for the Darwin awards.

I am curious now. Where do you figure the action will fail: bolt head lugs, threaded portion of the action and barrel: since the case is enclosed in the barrel, surrounded by the threaded portion of the action?

The 338L bolt head has longer lugs to accommodate the higher pressures and larger diameter of the 338L brass head. The 338L action is also special in that the lug ramps and perches are thicker and tougher. The 338L action is also a large shank and has barrels contoured to larger diameters around the chamber to handle this size of case.

If you want a 338 bore cartridge that will equal or surpass the 338L look into a 338 EDGE. It is basically a 300RUM necked up to 338 with an improved shoulder angle. You can build a 338-EDGE on a small shank and be just fine and only need to run the standard 7RM bolt head you already have. Easier to find and cheaper brass, better performance, and works on regular actions. Just a better choice all around IMHO.

Thank you for the input. I looked up the 338 EDGE and see what you mean about the physical fit. Calculation of case area at its largest diameter(at the head above the rim) 0.587 for the 338 Lapua and 0.551 for the 338 RUM case used by the 338 EDGE would at say 60,000PSI in the case would yield a force of 16293 for the Lapua and 14305 pounds for the EDGE on the bolt lugs, clearly more for the Lapua. Still thinking about it. I am enjoying this forum.

Reading further, is the 338 RUM a match for the 338 EDGE and suitable for my standard shank Savage 110?

Bootsmcguire... How about the 338 RUM instead of the 338 EDGE?

You would still wanna put a RUM on a large shank.

Not for nothing, but isn't it common to see 338 LM on Rem 700s, and there shank size is even smaller than a Savage small shank,

No, it not a common thing...Remington once tried it with dismal results and ask anyone who knows anything and they will advise against it.

I had a shooting buddy that had a 700p in 338LM, I never really cared for those 700p.

In regards to the Edge. I've been told, and read, that it's fine on a standard shank, and that's what I plan on building unless I find out there's an issue. That was my reason for going with the Edge vs the LM. Thoughts?

The .338 Edge should be built with a large shank barrel in my opinion. I'd also seriously consider using 0.550" lugs as well. The Edge is very similar to the Lapua Mag as should be built as such.

I'd rather over build than under build something that's going to be right up against my face. Just my two cents.

For me, I would choose a better action than a savage action for the 338 lapua magnum. A Bat or Stiller actions that is designed from the ground up to work with the 338 Lapua Magnum.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

You could have 2 or 3 complete builds, for the price of one of those actions, one of the main reasons for building savages is affordability.

I decided to sell off my Savage FCP .338 Lapua Mag just because I don't have the time to use it or workup any loads. It's listed on this site. I will sell it pretty reasonably to anyone looking to "safely" get into a .338 Lapua. I owned the Remington 700P .338 Lapua years back and though it was a waste of money. The groups were terrible. I also built a custom .338 Lapua with and Barnard Action and Bartlein barrel and I can honestly say I like the Savage better. I also have all the reloading equipment and supplies needed to start reloading the .338 Lapua.

Whatever you decide please just be safe. No one wants a barrel becoming a hand grenade or a bolt coming back in their face.

After a lot of reading, I decided to go ahead and order a 338 EDGE barrel from Shilen (they will not chamber a small shank in 338 Lapua). Have the dies, coming so now I need brass. Do you fire form 300 RUM brass using the COW method, then check/trim length. Does anyone have a powder charge they recommend for fire forming?

You don't need to fireform anything. The shoulder location and angle are the same as the 300RUM. Just neck size then normal brass prep.

What are you getting for dies? I use Lee 338RUM for neck sizing, shoulder bumping and bullet seating. I also use a gutted 375RUM FL die for body sizing but it doesn't touch the neck.
