Savage 10 Precision Carbine vs Remington 700 5R

Hey guys,

I am brand new at precision rifle shooting and I am picking up my first bolt action rifle. I ordered a Savage 10 Precision Carbine and will receive it in a few days. The only rifle that has made me second guess my decision is a Remington 700 5R.

I will more than likely do most of my shooting within 500 yards, and would like the ability to work my way up to 1000.
No hunting anytime in the near future.

Here are the features I'm looking for:

20" threaded barrel
Capable of shooting MOA out the box (Granted I can do my part)
Not in need of any immediate upgrades
Durable/Reliable

Which is the better of the two rifles? I think both rifles are capable of fullfilling my needs. I like to buy once cry once, but I'm not sure that the 5R is worth the extra $300. Plus I will have to sell the Savage 10PC because it has already shipped.

With the right ammo I don't see why the Savage wouldn't do what you want. But then I'm a little biased. Good luck with the new rifle.

Thanks for your help. From everything I've read, it seems like the Savage may be the better shooter out of the box. The only negatve drawbacks I've learned are that the Savage lacks ability for upgrades in comparison to Remington and that the action is sloppy. I havent handled either rifle. How much slop are we talking about? Maybe it varies from rifle to rifle?

I think I will stick with the Savage.

I asked the same question on Sniper's Hide and a lot of guys are saying to purchase the Remington. They claim it to be more reliable, especially when ejecting. Is this true?

I think you'll be fine with the 10. Seems like you always hear the bad more than the good on most forum's. I've got a few savage rifles and all of my experiences have been good. My newest one, just over a year old, has about 1200 rounds run through it, about 900 of those have been in tactical precession matches and the gun has never failed. The barrel has been so hot that you couldn't touch it. The action so full of dirt, dust, and powder residue that I new it would quit on me but never has! But like the rest I will report anything that goes wrong with it, just so I fit in. The rifle will deliver, you'll be the deciding factor!

Alright, I made up my mind. I'm keeping the Savage and I'm going to shoot the living hell out of it. Atleast I will try.
Thanks for your help. Sometimes I need to learn to be happy with what I have instead of giving into all the hype.
