Fix the mag box to the stock.
I have a model 116 that was a 7 mag and I would like to make it a 6.5 RUM. It looks like the back of the receiver can be milled for a longer cartridge, but how do I affix the mag box?? Do I have to scrap the mag box and go with a DBM??

6.5 RUM you won't be disappointed, I can vouch for that.

Dean, have you been down this road?? I'm thinking 32" Bartlein barrel with Matrix 160 VLDs. Will I get more that 1000 rds before I have to set the barrel back and get a clean throat??
Being no stranger to overbore cartridges this is what it boils down to, rounds 0 to 500 it is a match barrel, and from 500 to 800 it is a target barrel, and from 800 on it is a hunting barrel, it is not good thing, it is not a bad thing, that is just the way it is, and I am fine with that, in fact even if barrel life was even shorter than that, I would still do it anyway, and If I could not afford it I would just wait until I could, that is how exhilarating it is, to some people 500 rounds does not sound like a lot, were not talking 223 here, get back to me after you have shot 500 RUM rounds, I just send them to be set back over the winter so that way I am never with out, and he ends up taking only 1/2 off the barrel since I sent it back at 500 rounds, if you wait until 1000 rounds he ends up taking an inch off, some say what is the difference, 1/2 at 500 or 1 inch at 1000, the difference is at 500 you are always shooting a match barrel, and at 1000 you are shooting a hunting barrel. as for me I shoot the 107 HPBT sierra's at over 4500 fps, they have a good BC and just never drop.

4500fps - friggin' amazing!!
I'm gonna try 160 VLDs at whatever I can get!! 3500 maybe.
Mill the mag opening to mimic a centerfeed. Then use a centerfeed DBM stock with the Accurate bottom metal. It is the same bottom metal as used in the Lapua actions.
The only hard part is getting the mags milled to accomodate the RUM shoulder.

160s in a 6.5 bore the bullets must be 3" long, mine is a 30" McGowen 10 twist, you know a 260 RUM and a 260 REM they are practically the same, one has an E and they other a U there like brother separated at birth, if it wasn't for double the case volume, you could barely tell them apart, once I was bored, no scratch that , once I was being my usual self and tried some Sierra 85gr HP that was varminting at it's finest moment, "note to self" get some more of those.

On a new serious note, I have been using 6.5 WSM dies for neck and shoulder sizing, and a gutted 7mm or 300 RUM for full length sizing, the 6.5 WSM dies are Lee's, I was using them until I could afford some nice custom ones, but the brass comes out so nice I said to heck with that.

I have a set of 6.5 WSM dies because I have a 6.5 WSM on an 11 action. I traded into a Redding 6.5 RUM neck sizer and about 30 pcs of brass. Seems most of my projects start out w/ dies (358 Norma, 30 Newton, 338-06 AI and this one). I'm currently looking for a 7/30 RUM FL sizer die to size the base.
Yes the 160s are a "flying pencil", just hoping an 8" twist will do it. might go with a 7.8" twist. If you can't tell, I have a 6.5 addiction that I am in the process of trying to feed. 6.5 Grendel, 6.5x55, 6.5 Roberts, 260, 6.5-06, 6.5-06 AI (this one is not finished yet), 6.5 WSM & 264 WM.
Is a 6.5/338 Lapua considered overbore?? ;-)
If your only setting back at a rate of 1" per 1000 rds that is not too bad. I was expecting 2"-3" per 1000 rds. I think I'm gonna buy this reamer rather than rent it as I will have many uses for it down the road. I plan on a 32" barrel with the first 9" or so at 1.2" OD. This should give me several setbacks before the barrel gets too short & I change to a WSM/264 WM/6.5-06. On the last chamber before the barrel gets too thin I'll make it a 6.5x55 and thread it for a SR Mauser.
There is no way an 8 twist will not be enough, even a 8.5 or 9 for that matter, 3500 fps X 720 div 8 twist that is 315,000 rpm, that's way to high 8.5 twist would be 296,000 rpm more acceptable but still high, 9 twist would be 280,000 now were talking, and my 10 twist comes in at 252,000 that is suppose to be optimum, don't forget you won't be getting those match groupings, if you wait till 1000 rounds and if you have your own reamer than there is no excuse.

Darn it Dean. Why do you have to keep telling me about these RUM cartridges??!!!
I do have an extra action laying around...........
Actually I have been resizing down to 6.5mm, in two steps from 7mm, first I run them through my 270 WSM dies first, and then they 6.5, they come out that much nicer.

Dean does this stuff to us on purpose lol. Then he posts these crazy awesome speeds and then youre caught, hook, line and sinker. Lol Hes got those RUM in the back of my mind too, and I happen to have a magnum laying around. Things that make you go hmm.... I will say the 6.5 RUM is very interesting to me, that BC with velocity like that...wow!
Dean, how do those 110s even stay together? What kinda speed do the 110s in the 7RUM run?

Hey Scooter, my 7mm RUM is a one off 12 twist McGowen, I have had those 110s in the 4500+ fps range, the 120 Vmax's are also entertaining when Varminting, to me high velocity shooting is my interpretation of shooting enjoyment, I have been to long range shooting get together's, everyone seems so intense they just don't seem to be having any fun, maybe they are, I don't see it, by no means is this a slam on long range shooting it's just an observation, I have seen many times.

Just to add to that not every load I shoot is a full bore fire breathing load most of them are but not all of them you can load down a buy just running the slowest powder you can get IE: H870,
50 BMG, US 869 Retumbo H1000 or 60gr of H4895, it also give your shoulder a break.LOL

Wow! Cant imagine a groundhog taking a 110gr bullet at 4500fps! Thats awesome! I couldnt shoot if I had to be tense all the time. Its my stress relief, I wanna shoot longer range someday, but when I can sit down and enjoy it like you said.
Im all for the fire breathing loads. I dont have anything like you do but my thought on it is this, magnums, overbores etc are made to push bullets faster than their non magnum counterparts, so push em faster ya know. I dont buy my faster cartridges to not run em fast.
Thats something that makes me uneasy with getting a big UM case, the recoil. Ugh, its gotta be a beating. I do use a lead sled with my mags when Im doing load development and stuff, but those RUM....ouch! During a hunting situation, its no big deal, I never notice it but on the range....blah, Id have to load em down lol

I had a Remington 700 Sendero in 7mm RUM, I think they come in a 9 twist, and use to shoot those same bullets @ 4000 FPS it was just as fun, who am I kidding the 12 twist is much more better.

I'm always relaxed when I'm shooting regardless of the range. Even in competition I'm relaxed. In fact I switched over from 3 flanged ear plugs, to an electronic head set and was LMAO on the firing line because I could here someone a few lanes down getting all pissed off and upset. When you do that, you only get worse!
Oh yeah, 4500 is way better no doubt!
How much difference in recoil do your breaks make on the RUMs, I've never shot anything with a break so thats why I ask.
Lone Wolf....lol, yep, gettn mad doesnt help at all, when I first started shooting for accuracy I used to get aggravated but it didnt help me lol. Its relaxing for me to shoot now, nothing like having put together by hand 3 controlled explosions 3in from your face and having them make a tiny clover leaf on the target

They only one that I have a brake on, with my RUMs is my 338 Edge, I do not notice any difference with or with out, since I only shoot 160gr Barnes TTSXs, I have tried some 250gr and 300gr bullets that there is a big difference with and without the brake.
