    7 wsm

My house was broken into and all my guns were stolen 2 weeks ago. I had a full blown custom 7wsm that shot unbelievable well out to 1000 yards but cost me 3 grand. I can't go that route again so I looked around some pawn shops today and saw several savage guns to use as donors. Which action do I need to build a 7wsm, I want to do it on a long action to seat 162 amax's out far.

They had several 30-06 and 270's. Would either of these work with a ptg magnum bolt head?

It would be a 116 in along action (stainless) but 110-111-112-and 114 could all be canidates. Yes you could swap a 06 or 270's bolt head to run a wsm.
A centerfeed (newer) would most likely give more reliable feeding than a staggered feed (older) but I expect with the right magazine or magazine tweak either could be dialed in, the centerfeed would just be easiest.

A 7mm Rem Mag or 300WM would be perfect donors if they are centerfeed magazines. Just swap the barrel to a 7WSM and you are set to go. I am assuming that you are going for an aftermarket barrel. Do some looking, some vendors will not make a WSM on a Small Shank Savage. No reason not to (when barrel has a heavy enough contour), but some won't. Any model built in 7RM or 300WM will work as is with a barrel swap as long as its centerfeed.

Give Jim at www.ApacheGunworks.com a shout. He makes some great barrels at great prices. He normally uses Green Mountain blanks (which I have found to be quite accurate for me so far) but he will make you a barrel on whatever blank you want if you are willing to pay for the higher cost branded blanks.

Jim at NSS is another good guy to deal with and he sells some great prefits. I have one of his CBI barrels in a 6BR that shoots so good its boring.
