Thread: Black around case necks on my gun, but not on others?

    You guys are hopeless.

To the OP: Check out this video.

I never used tempilaq for the longest time. I still made ammo.

You dont have to dunk the brass in water. I found that I had to dry the brass if I dunked it. This guy uses a damp towel, I have just dumped them on a work bench and not worried about it. No issues either.

Have fun, ignore these other heathens.

Geez Sean, No need for name calling over different methods of annealing. Its a proven fact if you take the same job, give it to 2 different guys, each one will do it their own way and each one will call the other a butt nugget.

    Heathen?
After being married 3 or 4 times that's a compliment compared to what I'm used to being called.
All kidding aside, I've tried the drill method, the wet paper method, the stretched out spring method and a few others. I use what works for me. It helps being methodical when you have chronic / reoccurring reloader's OCD.
    Have a nice day.

No that's my outdated antique of a laptop sending 2 posts after I hit the go button. It does it every now and again. There's a few other strange & unusual things it does depending on which site I'm using.
Just one of many reasons why me & these new fangled electronic gadgets don't get along well.

    Dial up?
    Wow.
There's a term I haven't heard in years. We're looking forward to moving out to our place in the wilderness, jungle, swamp, whatever you want to call it. No cell signal. No TV or internet unless it's by satellite, you have to pack a lunch to go to the store.
We recently had daylight piped in there.

I can soot up my brass to my hearts content if I so desire.

I get sooty case necks all the time on my reloads. I don't use a whole lot of neck tension, so that may be the reason. I ignore it,, I've had it on 3 different .308 barrels, one .243, and one .223. I get wavy soot marks on factory ammo some times. I have even loaded them pretty hot 44 gr. IMR 4064 and 175 SMK over 2700 fps, anealed and all but the soot has never caused a problem and I get fantastic accuracy.

Deano needs occasional harassment to keep his mind off of "other" matters.
Like where he lives and the Third Reich governing the area. I look at it like I'm helping him maintain his sanity.
Feel free to jump in anytime . It for his own good.

I hear ya....I work in Boston and have an Apt there, but fortunately live in Michigan....I should try to hook up with Deano when I get back to work this fall...

Since I could not find a ball anywhere in this Podunk town and my neighbor has a complete wood shop, I made this handle for my Lee trimmer.

I think it turned out pretty nice!

Looks like you plan on some serious trimming with that thing.
Might even double as a weapon if you happen to wander on the wrong side of town, too.

No wrong side of town here. Population 1300 and I know half of them.

Yes indeed, it turned turn out well.

Yeah Frank, it's a sporadic cell phone free area throughout the area. It is nice to be able to shoot/coyote hunt in your back yard but thinking the camaraderie at a range would be fun. Maybe test a chrony against Dean's load data for grins...

Really got some mileage out of this one.
Cover quite a bit of ground, too. Everything from sooty case necks, annealing, case neck trimming, gluing wooden balls, Deano trying to blow up his rifle, cheerleaders - the list goes on.
That's why guys like it here. The conglomerate of well rounded, knowledgeable guys here willing to share info.

    I'm disappointed.
I always enjoyed the snappy comebacks whenever I made comments about your reloading technique. Is this an "age thing?" Getting a little cranky?
Maybe you need a little vacation. Some time off from life. Hop on a buss, c'mon down and we'll soot up some case necks at my place.
Or, I'll soot up some case necks. You can stretch out some primer pockets or attempt to turn a bullet into dust as it exits the barrel.

I may be classified as "semi-heathen" because I gave a few serious answers and some not so serious.

Besides, there isn't anything anyone can call me at anytime that I haven't been called before.
I'm beginning to like having a nick name that doesn't begin with "F"....

You're a little off topic there Bill.
This is about sooty brass necks, annealing and heathens.
You'll have to wait for the next discussion.
That notwithstanding, I'm happy for your rehabilitation just the same...

My word ! You people have strayed every which way. I'm not sure where to start to get back on topic ? So simple go easy on the zinc annealing will solve the problem ? No voodoo rituals before or after or dunking the hot cases in your most recent mug of beer ? No turning of the neck required ? Just load 'em like Scope eye and deal with the loose primer aftermath. Ok, I think I got it, seems pretty straight forward. Thank you all for your help, you've been a real Godsend lately...
