    sa 6.5-284

I have two savage rifles. One 22-250 and one 7 mag. I put a McGowen barrel on the 22-250 and love it. Wanted to put a new varmint contour on7 mag but haven't found one. Looked at 6.5 - 284 which is available in large shank which both of mine are. The bolt face is right on the sa but is the action and magazine long enough for it. Lapua brass and 6.5 bullets seem to be available which is a big plus.

Are you sure both of your rifles are large shank?

6.5-284 Norma I am assuming... Regardless...your 7mm Mag is a Magnum action, not a long-action....so a 6.5-284 Norma (which will fit in a short-action will certainly fit in a Magnum action. That being said, the bolt face for the 6.5-284 and a 7mm Mag isn't the same. The 6.5-284 uses a 470 bolt face and the 7mm Mag uses a 540 bolt face.

You will need to double check your actions are large shank, from my understanding only the factory wsm's, the 375 ruger and the target actions are large shank, all the rest including the 7rem mag are small shank

Both your rifles should be small shank, he 22-250 should be a short action, the 7 mag should be a long action.

Man, it's hell getting old. I was getting standard shank mixed up with large shank. Both my rifles are small shank. According to my Berger book Coal of the 6.5 x 284 Norma is 3.228 and my short action magazine is 3" so I don't see it working. I have a bolt face coming from Pacific and if I can convince McGowen to make me a barrel I am set. I don't see but two actions from Savage, sa and la but I could be wrong there too. I could put a 6.5 x 47 on the short action but the 22-250 McGowen barrel shoots too good. I have learned so much from this site. I just hope my wife doesn't find what all this stuff costs especially the Nightforce scope I have my eye on.

SA I think I would go Creedmore over the 6.5 x 47. At least you have one committed and widely distributed ammo manufacturer (Hornady) making ammo. I roll my own but it is always nice to buy a box or two - fire it and reload.

I've had two 6.5 x 284 Norma barrels on Savage LA's in the past couple of years. If you use the longer 6.5mm VLD bullets, I don't think you are going to find a Savage SA long enough to seat bullets for best accuracy and maximum cartridge capacity unless you go single shot. I would use the Savage LA you currently have the 7mm Mag barrel on. As noted above, you will need to get a LA 0.473" bolt head. The 7mm RM magazine box and follower also work perfect for the 6.5x284 Norma.

6.5-284 will work in both the long and short actions but you won't be able to seat the bullets long in the SA and fit the savage mag. You can single load them though. The LA is a better candidate. As mentioned you will need to swap you 7mm bolt head to .473 which is only $25. I just finished a LA 6.5-06 on a 116 SS LA which will be sweet. I have not shot it yet but am working up 140 Amax's in necked down .270 brass and H4350. Hoping to get 2900 with it.

Funny I just bought a 116 SS LA for a 6.5-06 build. Unfortunately, I have to wait another 3-4 months to get home and build it. I think I'm going to go with H1000 though. Seems the throats last long with the slower burning powders and lower pressures. Hit me up when you get yours shooting.
