Just wondering if anyone out there is running a standard .223 with a long throat cut in it? I need to keep it to a standard .223 chamber for use in F-class restricted, so please no "just chamber it to another cartridge".
The way it sits now with the factory Savage dimensions, a Berger 80VLD will touch the lands at about 2.478. We are looking to throat it out for use with Berger 80's and 90VLDs, since it's a 1-7 there is no reason to not shoot only those. So, where we would like to try and seat them to is approx 2.525 and that would make the 90's OAL to be 2.67. So we are going to take approx .050-.060 of throat out (extra to allow for a slight jump). Any else doing the same? How much more powder can you stuff in there, velocity increase, slower powder etc.. Let's hear some details :)

Not now but several years ago I had the Savage factory barrel in .223 that had the "infamous" long throat. It was the 26" stainless fluted varmint contour. I called Savage and they said it had the long throat intentionally. Anyway it was an extremely accurate barrel. Don't think there was a bullet made that would get near the lands. Only thing I ever fired in it was the 75g Bergers.
I resently got a new Predator .223 with a very long throat.
I to will be having it recut to remove .050 of throat.
I shoot 40-55gr. and I set .135 from the Lands with the 40 V-Max
and .085 with the 55 V-Max
I throated out a 1-8" 22-250AI and immediately lost accuracy with the same bullets that I had been using, only still seated into the lands (.060" longer). Different powder combos made no difference.
