Officailly joined the club - Got my first Model 99 today!

It only took me 12 years of running this site to finally do it, but I finally bought my first Model 99 today. They're few and far between here in northwestern Ohio, and if/when you do happen across one at a gun show they're either in pretty rough shape, way over priced, or both. Today just happened to be my lucky day as I found a nice clean example with minimal wear and handling marks for what I consider to have been a very reasonable price of $550.

It's a pre-mil model chambered in .300 Savage with checkering. Has a pistol grip butt stock and a schnobel tip forearm. Also has a brazed on sling mount just forward of the forearm but I'm not sure if it was factory or something added later. Bluing is probably 85-90% with no major scratches, gouges or pitting anywhere. Only really noticeable defect anywhere is up on the top of the receiver where it was D&T'd for scope mount screws. Buttstock shows some wear back by the butt plate, but otherwise the furniture is in fairly nice shape with no cracks or major flaws.

For the price I think I got a pretty darn good deal, but I'm sure Joe will tell me otherwise. haha

Can't locate a date stamp anywhere on the barrel like a 110, but there is a circular stamp with 26D in it located on the front side of the lever pivot.
If that's indeed the date stamp that should put it in 1952.

    About time.

Watch how fast you start selling off your bolt guns now and buy more of these, lol.

Your right on the date code, 52 it is.

LOL...I dunno about all that. Besides, I only have 4 Savage bolt guns - a 110 series, an Axis and two pre-AccuTrigger rimfires. There were lots and lots of older Savage rimfires to be had there this weekend though, but no pre-1920 pumps or semi-auto's and no 29's which would be the only ones that would really tempt me - ok, maybe a minty Model 1919 NRA would to. lol

Oh yeah, would you say that sling mount on the barrel is factory or an add-on? I'm guessing add-on as most 99's I've seen with a sling have the front stud where the forearm screw is or it's a much smaller/slimmer barrel mount than this one is.

    Jim,

You suck in so many ways! But seriously, congrats dude!

Decent ones are rare as hens teeth around here and priced accordingly.

I know the feeling Jody - hence why it's taken me 12 years to finally get one. In the last 10 years or so of going to the local gun show I've maybe seen 5-6 Model 99's in total up for sale, and usually they're always way over priced. Last month there were four of them there and of course I had only brought about $400 with me that day. This month there were just two and this one happened to be priced very reasonably.

I still want one in .250-3000 Savage though, just because I have a box of ammo left over from the Model 16 FHSS in .250 Savage I reviewed a couple years ago. Can't have that ammo sitting and not have a gun for it - that's just sacrilegious!

I hear ya, a buddy gave me over 200 rounds of 9mm last month so I've been looking for a dirt cheap handgun in that caliber just to shoot them all and then sell the gun again.

Ya, the R's were the only ones that came with sling eyes around that time, the EG's wouldn't have left the factory with sling studs. If it was special ordered for the gun they would have been sling eyes like the R's wore.
