    Large shank rethreaded to small????

Lots of ideas bouncing around in my head and one thing I need advice on. I believe it is possible to rethread a large shank barrel down to a small shank but would it be ok to do on a 325wsm barrel?

If it is a factory contoured sporter barrel I have to agree with sharpshooter, NO.

If it is a Varmint or bull contour or something similar then yes it could be made into a small shank. All of the WSM barrels I have had have been small shank and work great. If it is a factory sporter then threading it down to small shank will most likely take too much material off around the chamber and make an unsafe condition. A heavy sporter/magnum contour may even be too light to do safely.

Why do you want to rethread just for my own curiosity?

Yes its a factory sporter. If you two are both saying its a bad idea I'm going to listen! I'll scratch that idea off the list Lol.

And the reason I thought about it is I really want to build a .270 and I thought that if I sold my large shank short action to buy a long action small shank I could turn my 325 down to fit that action for if I ever go moose hunting. I'm not wealthy and with three kids at home I have to watch spending and get creative when i want to try new calibers and combos.

I am not a Moose Hunter nor have I ever had the chance so take this as an ignorant question, but would a 270 with a heavier bullet of tougher construction and shot at a reasonable distance not cleanly take down a Moose?

A .270 Winchester, properly loaded (and placed obviously) will cross the eyes of any mammal in North America.

The monometal and bonded bullets we have available now make easy what JOC and Elmer Keith would never do.

I wouldn't hesitate one second picking up the great .270 to slay the easily killed moose.

The OP stated that he was pinching pennies and he stated he was building a .270.

I feel that assuring him that a .270 would do the job on a moose hunt would save him the pennies he'd otherwise spend on getting the .325 barrel rethreaded.

How is helping the OP meet his stated goal of saving pennies off topic?
