    First build

Hello guys first post been trolling awhile and I have made the decision to start my first build, which is probably not good considering my addictive personality. I am leaning towards starting with a new target action because i like the single shot idea but more importantly the right bolt left port thing. My first question of many im sure is that on savage's website they only mention a standard caliber and a 223 bolt head. I have done much soul serching and have landed on the 22-250 cal for this, either standard or AI, and would like to know if this is possible using either of the two actions. And if it is would any alteration need to be done. Thanks in advance for any help.

The 22-250 base looks more like a .308 than a .223. Perhaps the standard bolt head is what you need.

The .223 is .373 and the 22-250 is a .473 which fits a zillion calibers.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!

Thats what i was thinking as far as the standard action fitting but was looking at the "what fits" article in the FAQ section on this site and it lists the 22-250 as a .472 head instead of .473 like the 308 and many more popular cals. Not sure if this is a typo or the 1/1000th differance doesnt matter?

1/1000th doesn't matter. The .473" is the nominal brass dimension, the actual bolt head will be bigger than that to allow the brass to fit in and out of the bolt head easier and to allow for variances in the brass.

Anything based on the 22-250 case (22-250, 22-250AI, 250 Savage, 6-250, etc.) will all work on the .473" size bolt face just the same as the 243, 260, 7-08, 308 and a zillion others.

OP, remember too that the Target Actions are Large Shank so when you order your barrel you will need a Large Shank barrel. Also research the action screw spacing for the style of Target action you will be getting. Some of them use the 4.40" to the outside screws and some use a 3.44" spacing to the outside screws, so keep that in mind when choosing a stock.
