Just personal preference I guess Leo, but I like wood stocks to look like wood. Factory stocks for the most part are cheap enough to try all kinds of experimentation on and depending on the intended use. In my experience a synthetic is going to be a more stable material that's less affected by conditions. I have however tried to enhance plain birch look fancier with stains and finishes and learn a little more every time. Here's a plain birch with a few enhancements to give it more of a classic look. A little stain (faux ebony tip done with stain), a little pinstriping ( to cover up the little bit of bleed from the stain.) some sealer, some white line spacers made from a sheetrock mud bucket and Voila. Stll have this stock currently with no action in it and may go back and try some further enhancement just for fun.Maybe some Faux grain or tiger striping. :) Sounds like you want more of a tactical look. In that case I would buy a cheap synthetic takeoff from the classifieds to use for a base. Just think it would work out better in the long run.
