Different OALs for 2 different Savage .223s ?

Just wanted to check to make sure I am not missing something....

I just got a used Stoney Point OAL gauge and was playing with it tonight. I have two different Savage .223s.

The first one is an older 110FP. Late 90s vintage. The gauge measured 2.40" to the lands.

The second one is a new 12FV. The gauge measured 2.29" to the lands.

Maybe I just need a little practice using this gauge, but it kind of surprised me at the difference. Probably more surprised on how long the older one measured.

Is this within the "normal" range?

    THanks.

I'll recheck the twists. I thought they were both 1:9, but I guess I better double check.

You said "older one" is longer; no big surprize there. How many rounds are through it?

Not sure about the round count. I bought it used. But after I got it cleaned up and tweaked, it is definitely a shooter. Mostly sub-1" groups with a couple of groups around 1/2". With factory ammo. Liked 45 grain Winchester better than 50 grain Remingtons (all I had at the time).

2-3 early (5 shot) groups tended to show some vertical stringing, then it seemed to settled in. May try bedding the stock. Then try a few different handloads.

    I have a new 110 308 and a new FCP 308, both measure different!!!!!!!

I measure each gun with my OAL guage with each bullet! Here is an example! Then I decide if I want them on the lands or how far from the lands!

Don't take these measurements, measure your own gun with each bullet! I usually measure about 5 bullets to get a good reference.

    Accu-Stock 110 Savage:
    2.297 COAL Nossler 180 NBT’s
    2.290 COAL Sierra 168gr HPBT’s Match
    2.286 COAL Sierra 175gr HPBT’s Match
    2.257 COAL BERGER VLD 175gr HPBT’s Match
    2.253 COAL BERGER VLD 185gr HPBT’s Match
    2.260 COAL BERGER VLD 190gr HPBT’s Match
