I was recently given a Super Sporter in 300 SAV serial number 5166. Where do I find the model number and how can I find the year of manufacture. Savage Arms says they have no records going back that far.
Thank you..

Mike trying to date that one won't be easy but you could send for a letter from the historian. I think it's like $20 or $25 for a Super Sporter. The letter will tell you the date it was accepted at the factory, the date it was shipped and to who it was shipped to.
As for the model...... if it does NOT have checkering it's a Savage model 40 and if it is checkered it's a Savage model 45.
Savage- "never say never".
Thanks Mad Dog:
The rifle does not have the original stock so that eliminates that aspect. Savage referred me to a Mr. Callahan in Massachsetts but he has not responded to my letter. I will keep trying.
I find it amazing that a company that boasts such high quality does not have the capacity to supply such basic information. In ten minutes I got the date of manufacture of a 30-06 made at the Rock Island Arsenal. I guess Savage is "too busy" !
It usually takes about 6 weeks to get a letter back from John.
Savage- "never say never".
