Picture of a friend's Remington 783 with my McGowan barrel installed. The Remington didn't have the correct bolt face, it's a .308, and the barrel was a .204 Ruger. I didn't see any reason why it wouldn't work with the correct bolt head. The Remington doesn't have a pinned recoil lug so you would need to hold it in the correct alignment. I used a model 700 type lug jig. The Savage barrel nut wrench fits the Remington nut perfectly.

This rifle has the nut you can see in the picture, with the splines. The action doesn't fit a model 700 inlet and unfortunately the action/stock screws have 1/4-32 threads. The owner was able to modify a 700 stock and epoxy bed the action in place. For the screws we single point threaded some shortened 1/4" SHCS screws, because he was unable to find 1/4-32 anywhere.

The Remington 783 Rifles do not accept the Savage Small Shank Barrels as a direct replacements. The shank size and thread pitch do match but the chamber is not machined as deeply as the Savage. Remington's floating bolt head is slightly deeper and the head spacing will be off.
Criterion is currently making us a Hand Lapped Match Grade replacement barrel for these Remington 783 rifles. I already have a 6.5X284 Norma in the works for the Model 783 that I have apart at this time. More information on this project as the barrel arrives.

Jim is correct the Remington bolt head recess is about .010" deeper. So for myself I would machine the .010" off the Remington bolt nose and use my standard Savage barrels. Or you could turn off the end of the Savage barrel until it had the correct clearance between the barrel and bolt nose and then only use that barrel on Remingtons. If I didn't have a broken right arm right now I would machine the Remington bolt head and install my 22-250 barrel and test fire it. I'll try it out in a few weeks and see if it works out. If you are thinking about installing a Savage barrel on a Remington be sure you check the bolt nose for clearance .007-.010" and you fully understand headspacing. If there is no clearance between the barrel and bolt nose you will get a false reading when adjusting the headspace and have excess headspace.
According to Frank de Haas, Winchester model 70 screws should have the correct thread. Isn't the 783 a variation of the Marlin?

I was on PTG's web site and they are making replacement bolt heads for the 783 including some of the uncommon ones like the PPC.
