My Dad passed along a Savage model 99 to me, I would like to find out what I can about the rifle such as date it was built. It is marked model 99, with no letter, the seriel # is 51303--.
Can any of you guys tell me anything about this rifle ?

The most common 99 Savage made falls right into that serial range. It's going to be either a model R or and I have a strong feeling the gun your talking about is a Savage model 99EG in 300 Savage caliber, they were kinda like the Winchester 94's in 30-30, everyone had one.
An EG will have a Schnabel tipped forearm and the R will have a rounder semi beaver tailed forearm.
Made (without checking) somewhere around late 1948.
Savage- "never say never".
I called Savage and they said it was made in 1949, thank you for your information.
It is in pristine condition. I am going to hand load for it.
Nope, I've got data on another gun that was lettered with a later serial number than yours and it's a 1948.
To be quite honest, Savage Arms wouldn't know if their arse was bored or punched when it comes to any guns made before 1989.

Not trying to gloat but I've been collecting age data on 1895's 1899's and 99's for over 15 years and I along with a handful of other guys know more about dating old Savage guns than Savage themselves.
The serial number and dates of manufacture were destroyed in a fire way back in the early days and Savage Arms doesn't have any aging data except what was made after 1960 when they moved to Westfield and started the A series serial number range.
I'm telling you (and you can have confidence) that your gun was made in 1948.
Or if you would like you can pay $30 and send a letter to the Savage historian who will look up your gun in an old ledger and give you a date and a work order for your exact gun but I know John's going to give you the same date I just did, up to you.
The historians information is at the top of the page in a sticky.

Thank you Mad dog, I respect your information and will figure my Savage was made in 1948.
Hey Mad Dog. . .how about a 99F 308 Win. serial # 11134@@? What date "round-a-bout" would that be? Thank you.
Late 1965, early 1966.
Savage- "never say never".

I've went to a couple of sites and cannot determine the manufacture date of a Savage 99 I just purchased. A couple of the sites had serial number searches but mine comes back invalid. I know it is a fairly modern 99 due to the .308 chambering and of no great interest to a collector. It is a Savage 99E .308 #c033058, checkered stock, rotary internal magazine with lever safety and 22 inch barrel. Just a basic Savage 99. If it isn't too much to ask I would appreciate any help I could get dating my 99.
1975.

How about B500303? I would appreciate it.
Model 1899x chambered in .22hi power serial number 126607
Thank you "Mad Dog". I do have one little question. My particular Savage 99 .308 has a 22 inch barrel. I read where they did not manufactured 22 inch barrels on 1975 Savage 99 models. They were introduced in 1976. Not trying to be troll....and I do appreciate your assistance.
