    Started my laminated wood stock

    Hi all

I do build stocks as a hobby, and a guy asked me to make him a stock for a benchrest rifle. He brought me a stock he had so I can replicate the shape on his, and I liked it so I decided to make one for my Savage Axis in 223 at the same time. Mine will be a bit different at the end, mainly because I want to use a bipod, but I started with the same dimension, we'll see how it goes.

    My client stock

    Then I tried that

I then glued 2 pieces to get the thickness I wanted

Then I routed the barrel channel. As I plan to swap for a heavier contour barrel later, I will make the channel wide enough right away. And I think the space around the stock barrel might help keep it cool. The Axis stock is on the left.

Next I routed the recoil lug, and I swapped the recoil lug into my laminate stock. Just take a vice-grip and pull on it, very easy.

My stock will be for single shot for now, maybe I'll try to find a way to insert the core of the magazine in it, not decided yet.

I hope you will like this !

Re: Started my laminated wood stock

Here is how I did the trigger guard. An aluminium strip (1/2" x 1/8" x6") and this jig in a vice makes a nice trigger guard.

I already got a couple of request for stocks. Here is the thing. I'm from Canada, and not a dealer here, so I cannot sell you a stock, let alone ship it down south, we both could get in trouble (as I was told)

I think it is time someone start modifying the Savage Axis, other than the trigger, so I'll start by making this stock, and I can only hope other will follow.

Oh, and before anyone asks why I modify my Axis, well, because I can !

    bob,
It looks like a nice project. I do have a couple of questions. Who sells Savage single-shot receivers? Where can one get the laminated wood for the stock? Barrel? Trigger? Thanks in advance.

Somebody in the states must have the capabilities of making a wooden stock for the Axis. At their price point, Savage must be selling a ton of these rifles. If I had the tools and space I’d do it myself.

    Laminated wood is available from Richards. He wanted $160 for a slab 36 X 12 X 3.

Making a stock for the Edge/Axis that accept mags will be my next project. I have a couple of ideas. Tonight I plan to continue this stock, so I'll probably put more pics up. As for the tools, I'll try to include a couple pics of my modest shop also.

Re: Started my laminated wood stock

    Hi all

For those of you curious, here is my modest shop. Workbench for manual work, table saw, router table, bandsaw, jointer, drill, miter saw, sander. That's about it

Now to the stock. I wanted some longer action screws, I took 1/4-20 bolts, cut the thread, and did some new 1/4-28 on them.

Next I worked on the trigger guard

A couple of holes and some machining with router/chisel

    Assembly

I shoot most of the time on a front-rest, but I wanted to be able to install a bipod, so I installed a threaded insert for the sling swivel

    Router work

And here is the shape, inspired by the McMillan A5. It is still in the rough, but you get the idea

    Hope you like it

VERY cool! 8) You do real good work. ;D
Next, think about an offset barrel channel (to the right) in a 3"+ forearm like the SSS Dog Tracker to handle the torque of the larger calibers.
Joel Russo did the A5L (laminated style A5) that went over REAL BIG!!
And think about moving across the border so you can sell your stocks to us guys in the USA. ;D

Re: Started my laminated wood stock

Looking Good! Thanks for your series of posts on this very relevant subject. Just fired my .223 Axis for the first time today and it surely could use a stiffer stock. Your laminated material appears to be very dense and strong. My hope from some manufacturer [realizing the non-likelihood of such a response] would for be a sporter version in a medium density wood. Easy answer, I know - "buy a more expensive Savage model..."

We await with interest your further posts.

    Thanks,

    Dyson

Re: Started my laminated wood stock

hey that is coming together very nicely. can you tell us a little more about some of the work. mainly just the inletting, is the barrel channel the same the whole lenght of the barrel?

Re: Started my laminated wood stock

    Hi

Yes, I was lazy and I made the channel for the barrel 1.25 all the lenght. I have another jig here that I used on a savage to follow the small barrel, but I plan to swap barrel in the future, so I made the stock ok right now.

Last night I sanded/shaped my stock. Not pictured is the tip that I made rounder. I agree it's a lot of stock for such a small barrel, but hey, why not !

    Thanks

In fact, I promised my wife a couple of pieces of furniture for the holidays, so I need to hurry and finish all my stocks (3 in the way right now)

hey just wondering what kind of training do you have? just practice, or did you go to some sort of school, or what? i suppose 1 could do this by trial and error but that could be costly not to mention very time consuming. anyhow i like the looks of the stock, i always assumed that there would really be more involved.

Re: Started my laminated wood stock

I learned woodworking at the Woodworking School of Québec. I've been working in the furniture industry for 10 years. When I bougth my first Lee Enfield it was sporterized and I made up a complete walnut woodset for it. It was 2 years ago. Now it kinda developped into a small business/hobby here.
