Sooo... I have a used Weather Warrior in 22-250 For a project...
Was looking down the .243 road for some longer range fun.. I explained my Project to a mate who knows a thing or two about "Long Range" and he "Made a face"...
I was hoping to see a glint in his eye and for him to start waffling on about how good the 6mm projectiles are and so on but he just kept staring at me...
After an awkward few minutes I asked him why he was making "That face" and he just said "well, you see if you want long range, get something much better than you have. Not just a little better".
So after some discussion we came up with the .300 WSM since I had a crack with his custom .300 WM last year and loved it... it seems to be the right compromise for range and hitting power.
I shall get ordering a Small shank lug in time and also the required bolt face from PT&G.
Do I need a new barrel nut? I mean, Lets say I get a Varmint barrel from Northlander, will I need a new nut or is it just wise to get one anyhow?

Just had a gander and they are a good price anyhow.. I mean, I'll be going to all that trouble to get an accurate rig and well an extra $50-60 for Nut and Lug is not gonna break the bank!
Just asking what are the advantages of the short mag over the regular mag? I was thinking a 7mm mag for long range, but I keep going back to heck with it and build the EDGE.
Well, for me I have a short action rifle... so I am limited there but, I have read they produce the same or similar velocity as the Win Mag but have better barrel life.
I'm looking to shoot the 150-165 gr pills as they'll take anything I aim at here out to long distance but really, I'll only be taking Billy Goats and smaller at long Range.
What is nice about the wsm's is no belt to deal with.It isnt a huge deal but you could build a really light weight hunting rifle with a short action if you had the need.

If you're still planning and going semi custom, check out the 7mm WSM. The 7's are UNREAL. Better ballistics than the 300. The 162 Amax makes the 7mm unreal in a short action. Great ballistics and enough carried energy (more than .300 at range) to 1k for any realistic LR hunting. Check out the 162 Amax running 3100-3200 FPS. .625 BC.
The new Nosler LR accubond in 168-175 would make hunting at range "easy".

I love my 300 wsm the only down side for me is Brass is expensive and can be hard to find. They go through alot of powder too (100 rounds give or take a pound) 7mm wsm brass is harder to find and it will go through barrels faster but still a great round too.
