    Scope recomendation

Putting together a savage 243. So far I have a woodchuch stock. Will soon be wearing a 26" varmint countour barrel. Rifle will be used as a hunting/long range paper puncher. What scope and power would you reccomend? I have really been looking long and hard at the Viper vortex hs lr in a 4X16X50. Would this be a good choice for this set up?

I'm a big fan of the Leupold VX2 6-18X40 AO.

Nothing wrong with the Viper or with the Leupold but i like the Sightron Slll series. To my eyes it is super clear with great light transmission. The thing to remember is get the best you can afford or you may be kicking yourself later and having to spend money again.

I agree with the Vortex HS and the SIII, No experience with the lesser leupold.
For all but the truly long range stuff you can do it well with a 16X or a 20X. Study the reticles for your purpose. You might even talk to guys who sell optics for a living what thier customers are doing with what reticle. This may be as critical as the manufacture in your price range. Get a 2nd focal plane reticle scope unless you are ranging with it.

Is 16X enough to hit 1000 on occasion?

IIRC Carlos Hathcock hit that far on occasion with an 8x Unertl. Now given no one here is Carlos Hathcock

I shoot a Viper Pst 4-16 as far as 800 on my 223. I think 16 is fine for out to a 1000. If you are going to shoot that far all the time, I would go with a 20 to 25 top end.

Honestly 1000 would be very rare for me. I just want to be able to do it to say I did it. For hunting purposed I probably will rarely ever shoot past 300-400. Even when I go to the range I very rarely shoot past those distances. I normally practice out to 300 or less. I know that a 4-16 is more than enough for what I do but was just curious as to how it might do at 600-1000 on occasion as I have never actually tried a 1000 shot to date.

you wiil be happy with quality glass and a 16x max. 24 is nice but in the summer it is worthless..at least in these parts.

Yep. Definitely get some quality optics. At those distances clarity is just as important as magnification.

Wow now a leupold is a lesser scope than a vortex, that company has some good propoganda or the junk they were selling has gotten a lot better don't know which one but I will stick to my VXIII's

it was vortex compared to the vx2 not the vx3. I agree the bottom end vortex are not high quality scopes ie.. The crossfire series

Taken out of context sir. The VXII is lesser than the VXIII, Mark 4 etc....

I am in agreement with you on the lesser Vortex being junk as well. The viper begins the product line in my opinion. I would never own a prostaff either.

Stangefish, sorry I did take that lesser comment out of context didn't mean to offend, I own several leupolds and there is a lot to like about them, custom dials, change recticals, clear glass, forever warranty made in the usa I know there not the best glass you can buy but being able to customize is very important sometimes, when considering all of the above for what they charge no other company even comes close JMHO
