comp recoil lug

What is a comp recoil lug and what does it do? Does it work with a stock barrel or do you have to change barrels as well?

From the factory the recoil lug is about .004-.007" out of square, a competition recoil lug is usually .250" thick and is perfectly flat, giving the barrel and receiver flat surfaces to mate to. You will not need to buy a new barrel to put one on, but you will obviously have to take it off to put the new recoil lug on.

Was also wondering about the recoil lug.
I have a 338-06 re-barrel and was wondering about swapping the lug, while swapping barrels.
My question with the lug is how does one go about measuring and or selecting the thickness.
Midway has quite a few to choose from, just measure existing or add a few thousandths for tighter mating to stock or what exactly ?
Is there a rule of thumb ?
I don't mean to take over this thread, my ?'s just correspond with the overall post of the recoil lug.

I just asked this about 3 days ago in the barrel section, but the guys told me that the 1/4" is what is most popular. So thats what I just got done ordering.

1/4" is about as thick as you can go without requiring a longer thread section on the shank. Obviously this varies from barrel to barrel somewhat but as a general rule its true.

I got mine when I rebarrelled my custom savage from SSS. I used their Douglas barrel, Competititon trigger, recoil lug, and a T&T job to finish the rifle.
