I use an action wrench (by Wheeler). Highly recommend it.
It looks like a piece of 7/8" x 1//2" x 10" steel bar clamped in my vise will slip inside the Stevens 200 action and serve to hold the action firm while I unscrew the barrel nut. This looks like an easier approach than using a barrel clamp on a tapered barrel. Will this work?
Also, I am having difficulty getting the magazine out of the Stevens stock. What is the secret?
Thanks,
Richard

NO! the nut is to tight if it is factory installed, you will damage the action before it ever thinks of braking loose!
it my work after the nut is loose. they never need to be that tight again.

I whole heartly agree....with an action wrench and a barrel nut wrench you need never to be without a project.

I agree that the Wheeler action wrench is a great tool for uninstalling factory barrels.
However, the wrench that model14 describes is a rear entry action wrench. Have heard a few stories about twisted actions using this type of wrench to remove factory barrels.
VISA loves me since I joined this site.
I don't think I even like the sound of "...a rear entry action wrench."

That there is my post barrel swapping tools, the rear entry wrench and the opened spanner. For the "snug" factories I still use this gadget, a clamp on style wrench and full spanner.

My set up is similar to Bill's

Interesting! Just so I understand how it works...Originally Posted by BillPa
With the action wrench in that position, you pull it towards you correct? In effect turning the barrel nut clockwise if you were looking from the rear of the receiver.
Actually I put it on the floor with the wrench handle positioned at a 45 or lower to the floor and press down. In effect I'm turning the action. Once it moves even 1/2 a turn its loose enough to lift up on the spanner to finish the job.Originally Posted by awp101

Understood, thanks! ;D
I have built three rifles by using a chunk of wood that fits snuggly in the action and held in a vise. A few wacks on the wrench with a "Manyl" hammer did the trick with no damage to the action whatsoever. All were stagger feed actions and I had to take off the magazine. Maybe I just got lucky, but three actions, no damaged actions...............
