Rock Creek Barrel first impressions PIC HEAVY

I ordered a Rock from Russel in 260 remington. It was a blank so I got to choose contour and length. I went with the m24/m40 style 24", and I had him thread the muzzle 5/8 x 24. It arrived a in about a week and a half and is a nice piece of work. Screwed it on and headspaced. I went out yesterday to do an OCW test with RL17 and 142 SMK's. This was my first time doing this kind of test and it was almost useless to me. Everything shot to about the same poi, just moving right to left about an inch from 38-42.9 grains of powder. I loaded up two rl17 loads and three H4831sc loads for today. Wind was variable 5-15 from about 10o'clock. shot groups at 500. As far as I can tell this barrel is a shooter. Gun is a LRP action in a Mcrees Precision chassis, IOR 3.5-18x50

I called about a 223 Ackley in 1-8 twist. I was told there was 223 Prefit that could be reamed out to 223 Ackley.

Awesome. I got a Rock in 6.5 Creedmoor on an LRP action Im still waiting to get some decent development time in for. I went with a medium palma contour, should have had the muzzle threaded like yours.

    Looks great!

Good looking shooter. Interesting you're not using H4350 for your 260.

I couldn't find any h4350 locally, did order some from 3rd generation. I have a comp this weekend so I had to get the ball rolling.

I've got an LRP in 6.5 in a McCree that I shoot for tactical matches. Does the Kydex on the rear help with small adjustments on the bags?

That's what I made it for. I prefer a more traditional style buttstock and the piece that came on the mcree just didn't do it for me. Took about an hour to make and works great. I shot down at the Whittington center last weekend at 1k had a 7-8" 5 shot group. Didn't do to well in the sporting rifle match though, 41-60.

I'll have to make something up and give that a try. I was going to make a carbon fiber cheek piece, maybe I'll wrap it with the angle on the bottom for adjustments on the rear bag.

I have owned two Rock Creek barrels and they have both been excellent shooters. These days, you are likely to have to have quite a wait to get your hands on one. I used a Criterion on my most recent build and it gives up nothing whatsoever to the Rock, without the wait, for less money.

Quite a wait? I didn't... I am not sure what you are talking about.

When Jim has a barrel in stock, he is lightning fast, no doubt about that!!!

I just ordered up my first Rock barrel. Russell had a prefit in .243 sitting the shelf. It was a little more than the CBI or McGowan, but it was on the shelf. NSS was getting some in a month or so and McGowan didn't have the twist rate. I originally was lookin to get a 6mm SLR tube but the wait was too long, with winter coming in Colorado it would be 7 mos before I could really shoot it. May have it rechambered to 6mmSLR next year. Will post up results in the next few weeks. Btw Russell @ rock creek is cool to deal with.
