Go to the video of Jim shooting his 7 Dakota and watch the gas print on the ground. Benchmark barrels make their own version of the same brake in that they have a lock collar which allows you and I to orient the brake without a lathe.

An audiologist set up noise equipment and there was only a slight increase of noise to the shooter over the same gun with the brake removed.

The brake was designed to elliminate the terrible back blast experienced from large case/powder capacities. It then was made in several different sizes for the small capacity cases so shooters could watch their bullets hit.
