    6.5 Swede velocity

Thinking of buying a 6.5 Swede to shoot 140's, but I'm wondering what kind of velocity is realistic in a modern action. I know I'm going at least 26", but would go to 28" if necessary. I'm really wanting to know if 2900fps will be obtainable. Thanks.

In a modern action with that long of a barrel id say 2900 fps may be possible, but... will it be most accurate at that velocity? Maybe and maybe not. From what I've seen the SE likes slower powders and less than max loads. Id start with .260 remington loads and work up safely. What's the intent of your rifle? What ranges? Be confident that at any ethical range you'll have enough gun to do the job on most anything in north america with 2700-2800fps. The 6.5 mm calibers are much more deadly than many people give credit for.

Strictly targets, I've been shooting a 284 win. Best accuracy right now is at around mid 2700's with the 175 SMK. Looking for something with a little better ballistics and a little less recoil. Not going to move away from the 284 without gaining anything. Thought a 140ish going 2900+ would be the ticket.

I'm getting 2875 fps out of mine with 26 in. barrel. Could go faster, but accuracy falls off if i push them harder.

I got 2900 out of my 30" Brux with 142 SMK and 4831sc I've only got 20 rounds through it there were no signs of over pressure. I get 2750 out of my 22" Shilen with 140 SMKs and 4831sc but can't get the groups I would like from it. Need to do some more testing as soon as my leg heals.

;D ;D Yes. And I am darn good looking right now....if I do say so!!!! ;D

And my answer is...."Yes you can" get 2900fps from a modern action (no military actions...no, no, no!!) I've done this with Berger 140gr. VLD's and have also got very good accuracy. However....I also backed off of this charge as the powder charge of RL-22 is a bit over the recommended max, and even thou it doesn't show signs of pressure, it's tough on brass.....and the life of Swede brass when you shoot it to the max, is tough enough.

So, I don't really see a need to shoot the 140's at that speed.

I get 2800 with 140's Sierra, and Hornady match and hunting bullets out of a 96 Swede 29" barrel with a max charge of AA4350 of 45 grs which is supposed to be under 46,000 C.U.P according to Accurate. I have been shooting this load for a long time in 4 different 96 Swedes and have had NO PROBLEMS. It is a tack driver load also.

6.5 Swede with 24 inch McGowen Barrel

    47.5 4831SC w/140 SMK - CCI Benchrest Primer = 2700 avg fps
    47.5 4831SC w/140 SMK - Winchester Primer = 2727 avg fps
    47.8 4831SC w140 SMK - CCR Benchres Primer = 2726 ave fps
    47.5 4831SC w/140 Amax - Winchester Primer = 2751 avg fps

I'd live to get 2850-2900 as well.

    Re: 6.5 Swede velocity

I have pushed mine at 2900 but accuracy comes in at around 2800 for my 26 inch douglas with sierra 140 game kings. I can't remember the velocity but the most accurate bullet I've tried was the hornady 160 round nose. This is a hunting rig on a 111 action in stockade's hunter stock. The barrel is a 1 in 8. RL22 was the goto powder for it. I see alot of guys using 4831sc but I didn't like the results. I've never shot any match bullets in this rig but want to try the 140 FB hornady. My loads are well above book max. At one time I think I've had up to 6 guns in that caliber, now only 3. YMMV

    +1 What Dave said!

First is VihtaVuori data for modern chambered 6.5x55.

    http://www.lapua.com/en/products/rel.../relodata/5/98

The Guns & Ammo article for M96 rifles.

    http://archives.gunsandammo.com/content/65x55-swede

This load worked great in my M96 Swede. Norma 130g Match, 48.0g IMR 7828, Lapua Case, Federal 210M, 2,950fps.

Norma lists this bullet at .548BC but some have found that it is probably closer to .590. Launched at 2900fps this bullet is running at 1450fps at 1000. I like these bullets a lot! Prefer them over the 140g by far in the Swede....old or modern.

Since this post has been revived from the dead, you can get the 2900fps using RL-22 and still (at least from the Shilen barrels I use) get fantastic accuracy, but again....you will get that at the sacrifice of brass. So, at least for me....the extra 100+ fps isn't worth the cost of the brass.
