The long and the short use the same front baffel the diference is in caliber. the 223 guns have a longer bolt stop on the side, that will shorten up the rearward travel about 1/2 inch.
Are there variations in the front bolt baffle besides "long action", "short action" (baffle with one side longer)?
Early models have the extra tang for sliding in the receiver groove, but still only long or short

Actually there are 3 versions. The standard, primarily used on standard calibers, the extended baffle used on .204,.223 and 6 BR, and then there is the heavy magnum baffle with a short side used on WSM's. There is a similar baffle that is used on the Axis rifle, but without the guide fin.
