Stevens 200 ??

I am thinking about picking up a good used Stevens 200 action in .223 for a project but was wondering if there were different generations of these actions? Are they all the same as far as where the bolt release is , action bolt spacing, and the feeding system? Is one any more desirable than the other? Also is there anyone that is making a good laminate stock for these ?

Also is there a single shot follower out there so I can delete the mag?

As far as I know, the bolt releases are all the same. The triggers are mostly the same using a straight wire like a cantilever spring, but I have seen pictures of a new generation coil spring trigger, but it is all good and that should not deter you from purchase. As far as actions you have a long and short action knowing calibers and their overall length is a good thing. Just figure that with a few exceptions (WSM's, 284 variant's etc....)anything longer than a 308 should use a long action. If I am not mistaken they used the same push feed feeding system but the early models used a stagger feed magazine and the newer ones use a center feed magazine. All this is the same as the Savage 10 and 110 series of rifles. You cant go wrong with a Stevens 200 action or rifle. You may find that aquiring one with a center feed magazine allows you a few more aftermarket options in regards to stocks and detachable box magazines however.

SSS has a single shot loading ramp for center feed actions.

I have modified the sss follower by cutting it to fit and epoxying it to the reciever.I have done this only for non centerfeed and for centerfeed it taps right in.

Stevens 200 short action measurements are 4.4" Fred sled from SSS is a single shot adapter as Stangfish stated.

Has anyone deleted the mag-well totally on these action to make the stock inletting easier? I guess its the beefier looking targets actions I am thinking of being stiffer. Any real advantages to the target action. I would think with a good 1 piece rail and a single shot follower glued in it would stiffen the stevens action up a quite a bit.

Just a suggestion. Canvas all the Academy Sports stores in your area. Sometimes you can find a 200 in stock there for cheaper than you can buy just the action. You can spin the barrel off and sell it for $60 bucks and I think I got 20 or 25 for the stock on ebay.

I don't know where the idea came from that any savage action is not stiff. Would take something huge
To cause it to flex. Stevens 200 is the same machined action as the 10, 11, 12, 14, and 16 without the accurtrigger
And other minor things. If you put a stripped 200 next to a stripped 10 with no bolt or trigger
It would be difficult to tell them apart.

We dont have such a store here in New Brunswick, Canada But that was my plan to buy a good used one or a cheap new one.

I have warped Stevens and Savage actions with out even pulling the trigger.

The Stevens action is capable of the same accuracy as a target action. The target action is just a fancy large shank version with a much better trigger. The stock Stevens 200 trigger should be placed gently in the garbage can and replaced with a Rifle Basix.

10 years ago when I started playing with the savage/stevens thing, and before I found the forum I used neither. These actions will twist easier than you think. I have a custom action wrench and matching custom barrel nut wrench now and haven't twisted anything since.

Phil all I use is an action wrench and a barrel nut wrench. I can see a action being jacked up if the barrel is stationary. Anything could be twisted in that instance.
