    Smithfield 840 age?

    Hello All!
I recently picked up a Springfield 840 in .222 with serial number 2332xx and have been trying to figure out about how old it is. I found one site that made mention of a change to the safety function in '76 that would allow you to keep it in safe when opening the bolt. Mine does not, so my guess is between '64 when they started requiring s/n's and '76 when they made this change?

This is actually my first gun :) I wasn't really looking into used guns, but when I picked it up I knew I had to have it. It just felt right in my hands. Wish I had known how much the ammo for it was before hand... Oh who am I kidding, I would have grabbed it anyway.

Any help would be great, Thanks!

I tried to message Mad Dog, as I saw him mentioned as the goto guy for this, but his msg box if full
