    smooth nuts

a freind bought a hog hunter & wants me to rebarrel it for him
does any one reuse these smooth nuts - or replace with regular nuts?
and is there any way to get these off without buying a wrench ?
I dont think I would want to reuse a smooth nut
even if I do have to buy a wrench to take it off

Drill a 1/4 hole , use a pin wrench , or use a split steel collar ,forgot the size but only $3-5 , install on smooth nut ,use pipe wrench .oh i thread a 1/4 20 thru the clllar and into the smooth nut ,just enough to get a bite . Ive been using the same one on savages , mossbergs, marlins .

Boy, this title got me raising my eyebrows!!! lol!
If you are not going to reuse the nut then keep it simple and use the pipe wrench. Use the a regular nut.

Yes , but since i had the tool for Marlins and mossbergs why not do it correctly as sometimes people want the old parts back and seeing them hacked up does not make them feel reassured.

When did Savage start using a smooth nut on the barrel?
Is it specific to any particular model / caliber?

I am not sure which models got them. I do know that I have a 10 FCP-K in 308 that has one on it. The model 12 Benchrest rig i bought a year later didnt have it, nor did the LRP I bought the year following the BR rig. It is also the only gun that has the trigger guard bolt release making finding a replacement stock a pain.

I have a 1970s production 110CL that has a smooth nut. It does have a hole underneath for a pin spanner.
