    243 ai maybe

here is the story i have a stevens in 243 that shoots 85grn sierra bthp's at about 3100 and i get .5 moa
i am wanting something that i can get 600 yd coyotes easily was thinking a 26" 243 ai, but am getting mixed feelings about the cartrige selection. i realy like the 6mm and want something that will be easy to get or make brass for, but be able to get more velosity to push a little bit bigger bullet and maybe, possibly use for deer. any suggestions

    I just dropped good money on a Brux From S.S.S., Cartridge you ask...Good Old .243Win 26" 1-8"twist
I'm gonna be hunting Groundhogs out to as far as I can, I'll be using 95gr VLD's and 105gr A-Max's
I may also run some 95gr Bibs through it at the range to see how it groups.

A 243 AI is the outcome of shooting a .243 shell in a rifle chambered for the AI. You will lose around 10% velocity on the first firing due to the "loose" fit in the chamber. The newly formed case can be started out with a max load for the parent case and worked up from there. I highly recommend the 6mm AI but if you are using a short action the long bullets like the 105gr or 107gr might not fit in your rifle, I built mine on a long action and use the 107gr sierra match king bullets and 4831 powder, never chronographed these but checking my sierra manual they should be right between a .243 and a 240 weatherby mag in velocity.

    bottom is a .25-06
    middle is a .25-06AI
top is a 300WM fired is a weatherby chamber we can ignore that for this discussion. (range find for those that fell the need to know)

You can see the neck/ shoulder point is in the same spot. that holds the normal case in place while shooting it in the larger chamber. the top of the case gets wider and the shoulder angle changes. makes the case bigger to hold more powder.

i have been doing some reading and read that the 243 ai neck is not as long as the 6mm ai how does that effect your results

    Re: 243 ai maybe

Some say the longer neck of the 6mm Rem reduces throat erosion. If that's actually fact, I have no idea but there's articles out there to support it. I love the 6mm Rem case and it's long neck. Plenty of neck to seat long bullets and still have room for powder.

The 6mm AI is a freakin' hammer......had one for a short time but decided to let her go as it was a 28" fast twist that I didn't really need. Currently using a slower twist 23" standard 6mm Rem for my coyote calling needs.

One plus of the AI chamber is that fireforming is normally extremely accurate. You will see a slight loss in velocity but not enough to really worry about if you're shooting varmints or something.

On another post on this same link of Wildcat Cartridges this appeared, go read it and it will answer most of the questions you hve about the .243 AI and the 6mm AI or even for that matter the 6mm Rem.
