    Bolt Head question?

I have just bought a new target action as a base for a new rifle and it has come through as a .223 target action. I want to use this action with a 6.5x284 barrel that I already have.

So - Can you tell me if this will just be a case of swapping the bolt head and front baffle or am I missing something?

Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

swapping those 2 parts would take care of the bolt head issue.
your going single shot? Just adding a new follower?

Thats good news thanks - Yes, this rifle will be based on the solid floor, single shot, three screw target action. I already have a RB Sav-2 trigger and a good Shilen Select ratchet barrel in 6br as well as the 6.5x284 barrel.

For a stock I was thinking about something like this:- (Maybe even make it myself)

    Why change the baffle?

I am bout to do a similar thing. I was under the impression that I just had to get the larger bolt head.

Can somebody please explain what I am mising.

    Thanks

.223 have a restricter to limit travel.

I see. The restricter would keep from pulling the bolt back far enough for the longer cartridge.

    Thanks!

    Re: Bolt Head question?

You can have the bolt face open up to .473 witch is standard bolt face or a .308 bolt face etc. The thing I would be worried about is a short action. If you plan to shoot the 142smk, 139lapuas, or the berger bullets you might want to use a long action. Don't quote me but it seems like I have read that you can't eject loaded ammo in a short action with these long bullets when chasing the lands.

So - Is the .223 bolt head just the same as the standard bolt head except that it needs opening up to the correct size? Is the only thing then that would need changing would be extractor plate for a little smaller one?
If this is so, is the bolt head hardened or heat treated in any way or is it just a matter of chucking it up in my lathe and skimming it out to the correct size, and is the size best size .473? This might be a good option as it would kep the bolt serial number the same as the action serial number.

I have used the target action with a 6.5x284 barrel before and you are right, long bullets loaded well out are just a tit too long to eject but I have not really found it a problem being a single shot action.
