    5.45x39 bolt face question...

Anyone know if a .378 bolt head has enough tolerance variance to accept a 5.45x39 case without opening her up? Any input would be appreciated.

Nope it will not fit .5.45x39 is the same as 762x39 and6ppcwhich is min 440 for case + at least .005 to .008 for the bolt face . I hope this makes sense as i have not had my coffee yet

Nope that is wrong Gmac. The 5.45x39 has a rim diameter of .394".
I'd say it's close enough to give it a try at least. .016" probably won't fit but you never know.

I do know the .480" 6.5x55 rim works in unaltered .473" boltheads but that's only .007".

I tried could not get 5.45x39 fit in my 204 bolt face (.384)
I guess you could open up the face a bit.

    Good info Stockrex.

I kinda doubted that the boltface would accommodate a .016" larger rim.

Thanks guys.....sigh....to the lathe then. Anyone know, is that what CMPArmory is doing for 5.45 bolt heads? Don't know why, but I'm just needing to build one. Jeesh now I'm going to have two Savage builds going on.

Well i just fit a 5.45x39 case in my 223 case head. So im sure the variances are out there. Just a matter of if yours is closer in spec than mine is and apparently yours is. My bolt head has an ID of .396 so compared to what it is suppose to be...its pretty sloppy

Even though it fits .002" is not nearly enough clearance for surefire functioning IMO.
