    long action ideas

i have a long action from a 30-06 donor i had it made into a 6-284 that didn't work out, now i am wondering about a cartridge that's fairly easy to load for would fit the bolt face and i would love a bad azz 6mm, but would consider outher options

    Couple more.

    .240 Howell
    .240 Weatherby Magnum

Of all five I've suggested I'd go with the 6mm-06AI

    3500 with a 105 ain't too bad!

Just cause its a long action doesnt mean it has to be a long action caliber. Dont forget about the 6XC. Thats the next one I want to do.

What did not work out about it?

.244 AI dies are easy to find. 6mm -06AI would be fun if it is not to wild on cost.

.30-06AI would let you use your current barrel.
    .223 Rem AI, .22-250 AI, .220 Swift AI .243 Win AI, .6mm Rem AI, .257 Rob AI, .25-06 AI, 6.5x300wsm .30-06 AI, .270 STW, 7mm STW, 28 nosler, .416 Taylor

I did a .260 rem on a long action and it feeds good and shoots real good.Just a plain all around good caliber to choose.

For a bad azz 6mm on a .473" boltface as stated in the OP you can't do much better than the 6mm-06AI.

I was wrong about the 6mm Gibbs it's called the .240 Gibbs if you do a search for it.

6mm-06 would be a hot barrel. of course the 6-284 is a hot barrel. as far as ballistics go they would be so similar i don't think you would tell the difference. Why did you not like the 6-284? if it was to hot then step down to the 6mm rem ai. if not hot enough (don't know why you would want more speed than that) then i guess the 6mm-06 ai would be next step up. I guess we need more info.

A bit of clarification....when you say bad a$$ you mean fast, accurate, long lasting barrel life etc? For fast sure a 6-06 or AI version are fast. For accurate and long barrel life the 6mmBR is hard to beat. And with the right twist you can launch heavy pills for long range accuracy.

    Re: long action ideas

the 6-284 that i had would not shoot. i tried ladder tests on multiple powders, powders used different primers and could not get the gun to shoot. i got so pissed i sold the barrel, dies and brass. i know now that i should have just set it to the side and messed with it later, but i was pretty mad after 150+ rounds and nothing.

when i say bad a@@ i mean something that will push 105's or heavier at a good speed, fairly easy to load for including brass forming, cost of materials and a huge bonus would be barrel life, but i know that doesn't really go hand and hand.

i have a 243 ai that i shoot 95 grain berger's out of and love how simple it is to load for and how accurate it is. there are a few things i am looking to improve on it just to make it shoot a bit better so maybe i could shoot a few more f class match's.

i hope this helps a little

Hey calib here's a dirty little secret for ya, you can make 257 WBY brass with 300 Win Mag or 7MM Rem brass, Shhhh don't tell anyone

    Tanks Dean

Ps I was chronoing my 264 Win Mag this weekend with 26" barrel and 10 Twist, with 85gr Sierra's and 72gr of hybrid 100v and was getting over 4100FPS with NO signs of pressure, guess what more powder is in my future, I would not be one bit surprised if I make it to 75gr I will let you know ;D

Ammoguide has 17 loads for it.
Loaddata also probably has some but I let my subscription to that lapse. Need to renew soon.
Since I got Quickload though it has become my primary source for loads. Love this program!

Wow, I just ran your load through Quickload with the 85 Sierra and a seating depth of one caliber (.264") and I came up with over 88,000 psi for the 75gr load and 76,628 psi for the 72 gr load.

Every chamber is an entity unto itself but.........

    Re: long action ideas

Hogdon has on there site 69gr of 100v and 3863FPS 24" barrel and 62500PSI, so no way that three grains of powder raises the psi by 14000 especially with a light 85gr bullet, and add to the fact that 100v is on the slow side.

    Re: long action ideas

I'm not doubting your experience at all.
I just adjusted the weighting factor to the Hodgdon numbers (62.5K at 3850 fps with 69gr) you cited.
I then increased the charge to 72gr and the pressure went to 72K at just about 4000fps.
Jumped the charge up to 75gr and pressure is 83K for 4118 in a 24" tube.

Added two inches of barrel and the 72gr load shows 4062 at 73K.

Like I said, every chamber is an entity unto itself but three grains is going to raise the pressure about 10K.
