    Bedding the Nut

Does bedding the nut and fist few inches of the barrel help on heavy barrel savages? I have howas that shoot best with the first few inches of the barrel bedded. My savage 260 with shilin barrel is always touching the first two shots and putting the thrird round at 7 oclock about .25 below the first two rounds, the gun did this with 4 groups last week at the range, cooling between shots, and it was two differnt loads. Would bedding the nut and first few inches fix this? cant seem to find any other problem.

...You shot 2 different loads, and want to correct the POI change by bedding? ???
I guess it depends on what you are after. IF you are shooting 1/4 minute groups, why are you changing anything??
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

The two different loads were shot at different targets, Believe me i am happy that the first two shots are touching, but 3 would be better, I havnt shot any 5 shot groups yet.

Beding the nut is hard as there is no way to get the beding back in the groves so you have to grind out a portion anyway. Some guns do respond to pressure points. Worst case you take it back out.

IMHO....the only "nut" that should be bedded, is the one who bought the rifle. And that's at the end of the day when he\she is tired. ;D

    Re: Bedding the Nut

I recently built a 308 using a Criterion bull barrel, 28 inches long. The nut and barrel are not bedded, yet initial load testing (40 rounds) has yielded 1/2" groups with the 168 gr SMK and .6" with the 155 grain A-Max.

Use black vinal electricans tape to cover the nut and put release agent on it. the only part that needs to be bedded is the reciever.

A little putty/modeling clay in grooves works great.
