    Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44mm

I'm looking for a scope to put on my new 223 12BVSS for target/predators, I've been using a Nikon 3-9x40mm in the mean time until I decided what to buy. I was also thinking of the discontinued Weaver Classic Extreme 6.5-24x50 with an illuminated reticle which can be purchased for $349, my buddy just bought one and it's crystal clear even at 24X. The Weaver has a nice German #4 with a dot and works great without the light. If I go with the Weaver, would it be feasible to also use quick detach rings so I can use it on my deer rifle because where I hunt, 3-400yrds shots are very common, especially in low light conditions. Buying one scope for two different applications may be a little too much to ask for, what do you guys think, the Vortex for the 223 or the Weaver for single or dual applications?

    Thanks

I just bought a VV 6.5X24X44 with the 30MM tube and it is sure a nice piece. I put it on my .220 Swift, I also realy like how the target turrets are so simple to adjust and rezero.

I went with the Vortex also, ordered from Cameraland for $280, free shipping. Decided to buy the Weaver Classic Ex. 4.4-16x50 from Natchez for $330 (originally $569) to use on the 06.

    Jm59,

How is the Weaver Classic Extreme compared to the viper?

IMO, as far as glass comparison, I would say the Weaver has a slight edge but I really prefer the reticle on the Vortex for target. The Weaver and my leupold VX3 are similar but not as good as my Conquest. If I had to make a choice again for my 12BVSS it would still be the Vortex, the Weaver is better for hunting.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at one of the 8-32x50mm models and the reticles do look coarse. I wish they had a model without the illuminated reticle too.

Depends what you are using it for, the German#4 is really my favorite for hunting, I have it in my conquest w/o the dot. The illuminated ret. can be adjusted for brightness or you can just shut it off all together.

Can someone who has this scope comment on the "MAG-View Bar" I keep reading about this feature but haven't found photos of it and don't know what it is and whether or not it is a useful feature or a gimmick.

Also, can you provide pros and cons about the wide plex reticle? I would be interested in how suitable it seems to be for Varmint, General hunting, and target shooting.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to share your knowlege.

I have this scope. Its worth the price.

The mag view bar is kind of a handle on the zoom ring that sticks out towards the shooter. It shows you easily what magnification the scope is on, and you can tell by feeling where you are too.

Is it a gimmick? Yeah. It is useful though.

The wideplex is OK. No pros or cons. It is fine for general use on everything unless you are looking for a ballistic or dot reticle.

The only downside is that 30mm Burris Signature Zee High rings are hard to find and pricey.

Buy the viper from cameraland right now and dont look back. I have 4 of them and love them, great glass for the price point. Anything over 20x during the day becomes hard to use anyways....
