IT has the new spooth barrel nut.
Very difficult to remove even using the SSS tool.

It ha been my experience that heat must be applied. I have had to cut the nut off before.

Hi I just use a pair of vise grips or a pipe wrench and don't even try to save it, for the price of that wrench you can buy several replacement nuts
    Thanks Dean

Can you use a regular nut in place of the smooth one. I know the threads are the same but I am wondering about if the Accustock has clearance for a regular nut? If so, anyone know why they went with the smooth nut?

    Re: Barrel nut

I think they switched to the new nut for two reasons:

    1. Aesthetics (its purtier)

    2. Lawyers. They want to make it as difficult as possible to discourage us from barrel-swapping. Also this would possibly cause people to buy more complete rifles, rather than just swap barrels.

    OK, that's three reasons..

    Re: Barrel nut

You left out the main reason....smooth nuts are cheaper.

They blue the whole assembly after it is all together,it hides any tool markings, and also acts like loctite thats why they are such a !@#$%^&* to remove.
    Thanks Dean

The smooth barrel nut is a solution looking for a problem. I say wear your nuts proudly, for everyone to see. For me at least, the nut is part of why I like the Savage, not something I need to get rid of or hide.

Pipe wrench it off, toss it and get a regular nut.
Friends don't let friends use see through scope mounts. No offense.

Much easier to do what my Gunsmith does, figure where the bottom of the ring will be, drill a hole and use a spanner wrench or a specialized wrench that just fits the ring with a precision dowel pin in it. You'll never see the hole and it's cheaper to make a set up that will work 100% of the time than the SSS wrench set up.

    My best, John K
