I bought this used in .338 Win Mag and could not get it to shoot very good groups.
I put on a McGowen barrel chambered for the .416 Taylor. With the original Savage black stock that I glass
bedded I went down to the range. I had two Hornady 400 grain Round Nose going 2400 feet per second
touching and the third shot made a 1 inch group. I had fire formed 50 rounds before this. My mount screws
worked there way loose (had fingernail polish on the threads) and one screw head broke off.
So I went out and purchased a Farrell mount and epoxyed and screwed it on to the receiver. I picked
up Farrell rings and added a Stockade stock which I glassed the chamber area. Now I have to go back
down to the range and see how this set up shoots. That is a Sightron Big Sky 6x scope.

Sharp looking setup. Quite a step up from the 338 Win cartridge.
Will this and those 400gr bullets be used for large rogue prairie dogs?
I am using 350 grain Hotcores in both my S&W rifle and the break open handgun. Fun cartridge!
Thank you for sharing

holes through paper down at the range. I ordered 500 rounds of gas checked lead bullets so I will
be having some fun shooting reduced loads with those. My main goal is to work up a load with
the 400 grain Barnes bullet going 2400 feet per second. I had a Leupold 2 1/2 to 8 power rifle
scope made up for that bullet with dots placed at certain ranges.

You are paper punching with this beast?
I scaled down a bit... here is what I was usingOriginally Posted by Galveston22

I gave that to my nephew who is a hunter, just incase he ever gets to hunt something that will
need that caliber. I had that 400 grain going 2, 550 feet per second. It is a bit cheaper
to shoot the 416 Taylor. The worst kicker I had was a Ruger number 3 in 45/70 caliber. Those
500 grainers going 1,800 feet per second and that plastic butt plate hammered me. I sold that but
I wish I would have kept it.
