    Lorens' first buck

My daughter shot her first buck today. She had shot a doe the previous two years. She is using a 1963 Savage 110L in .243 Winchester. I am hand loading it with 33.5 gr. of IMR 4895 and 95 gr. Nosler BT's. The buck dropped in its tracks.

Congrats to you and your daughter! My oldest turns 6 in feburary and she is getting a red rider to learn on. That's great you are getting your daughter hunting! I had my first son in feburary of this year and people keep saying "good, you finally have someone to shoot and hunt with" my answer is NO my daughters will hunt with me first if they want to. The girls now help me set up stands, check trail cams, and reload with me. Good for you for getting a child involved, especially your daughter!

    Re: Lorens' first buck

Thanks for the props everyone. She is 11 now. For my family, shooting is a way of life. Both of her grandfathers are avid shooters, and one was a handgun instructor for years. She started at 4 on a Red Rider and quickly moved to larger guns. At 7 she got her first pistol, a .22, but was also shooting .38 Specials, 9 mm's, and such. On rifles, she mostly practices with a Savage Model 16 in .221 Fireball. She shoots 300-400 rounds a year, with about half being at 200 yards. She shoots the 110L in .243 for most of her hunting. She also shoots various other rifles including a single shot .357, 22 Hornet, 7mm WSM, 45-70, and shotguns. My little boy is 5 and he is on the BB gun kick now. They also have to help clean the deer or hog, carry corn, help on the ranch etc. In addition, they must have good grades and behavior in school. By the way, my daughter has to reload everything she shoots, under our watchful eye, of course. My little boy can already work the powder measure and the press. Their friends are amazed at the responsibility they have EARNED. To them, there is no mystery to guns. They are tools to harvest food, a means of protection and entertainment, and a way develop themselves to be self sufficient.
