Yeah ive seen a few 22 hp's i stayed away from them as the bolt face is larger that 308, and my smith said there not good to recalibre in the 308 case head types. Plus they were straight grip and/or takedown.
Did the Feather light or "F" model have a forend like the your A or your EG?
That straight grip is growing on me...... i think i want one!!! I just found another 99 pre war supposedly and 159XXX for a serial number, its straight grip and in 250-3000. What model would that be? I dont beleive there is anymore markings on it but i got the information over the phone and i havnt seen it. The stock is in bad condition... held together by screws around the lever section. He wants $850
Thats a very early model 1899 250-3000. Not worth $800 if the stock is busted up.
No, the F's and the R's don't have a schnabel tipped forearm like the A and the EG, they were rounded off on the end.
Is it just me or does that A have a smaller action than the EG in that photo?
It's just your eyes playing tricks on you.
Maybe it looks smaller cause the EG is in front, closer to the camera and has 2" more on the bbl than the 250's 22" barrel.
MD, didn't realize that yours in the newer style saddle gun with the 22" barrel, mine is a 1974 with the 20" barrel and sure has a nice feel to it. Points quick and probably is lighter.
Wouldn't be that much lighter.....whatever 2" of barrel would weigh! ;) ;D
I bet 4 or 5 ounces. Small caliber barrel. The heaviest part of a rifle is metal, so two inches of that is the biggest bang for your buck on weight. That is why so many sporterized military rifles have the barrels cut back.
Mad Dog tell me about this dealer who can ship here too Austaralia.
Here it is here, after reading it again I see he charges $349 a gun which means that I can probably do it myself for about $150.

I sold a Beretta Mato to Roger Vardy in Australia and while it took over a year for him to get all the paperwork, he had me ship it to a dealer in colorado that does a lot of exports. Good luck, it may be easier from Canada
Mad Dog does the 99 lock up at the rear or the front like the sako finnwolf and winchester 88 do?
Aslo does the barrel free float or is the stock attached to it?
Getting a rifle out of the USA sounds hard..... i hope canada is easier! Ill do some ground work after Xmas has passed.
Hope you having a good holiday MD ;)
Not Mad Dog and I don't know the sako finnwolf but it locks at the rear. No locking lug to speak of - the whole bolt slides into place and the force of firing is taken up where the rear of the bolt body buts up against the receiver. A very precise fit (one reason the 99s are too expensive to make now) but they still let some stretch happen and aren't suitable for "super maximum" loads etc.Quote:

So if the forearm attaches to the barrel wont that mean the barrel is not free floating and be less accurate?
The 99 barrels are not free floating on the 99's. Ya, alot of guys find they bind and cause flyers when shooting at targets, especially with the T/D models. Maybe thats the reason that out of all my Savages I don't have any take downs. ???
I see, but deer hunters never complained right..... and the browning BLR forearm is the same isnt it..... wait does that mean the ruger no1 is too?
Right - no two piece stock is free floating. Not necissarily less accurate, just a bit harder to avoid fliers as the barrel heats.
AS the barrel heats..... thank you Eric it might be better using carbon fibre wraped barrels for firearms such as these. Heating one off those would be a task so it would aid in preventing fliers.
I finally put some more money down on the 99R and i took some pics while i was there. Here they are just for you Mad Dog i hope you enjoy.....

If we can figure out how to trade guns from country to country you can have any gun in my collection for that gun!
Hmmm - does that include any octagon barrel 32-40's?? I could probably come up with a similar R for one of those!!Quote:

Also a 1899A Short Rifle in 38-55 and an 1899F SRC in 25-35 and an 1899A round barrel in 25-35.
So im guessing you like it ;)
I was very impressed with the tightness of the action but i honestly thought it looked much better when i first saw it. It has a ways to go before i own it which gives us time to work something out.
Oh yeah what DO YOU have in your collection BTW ;D
Pick anything thats a solid frame and it's probably here. ;)Quote:
